One of John Stuart Mill’s most gripping claims is that everyone’s a utilitarian because every normative ethic was originally founded on the principle of utility; just as we can’t escape our human nature, we can’t escape utilitarianism. Of course, critics range several robust objections against it, but none have proved fatal to its popularity. This lesson covers the arguments for and against utilitarianism, how they work, and why they’re important.
