This is a full mark (25/25) essay written in timed conditions on the character of Stanhope in R.C. Sherriff’s Journey’s End and marked by my English Teacher.
The question is: ‘Stanhope is a classic example of a damaged man presented as a sympathetic figure.’ Examine this view of him in ‘Journey’s End’

This was written as part of the AQA English Literature A-Level course for Paper 1: WW1 and its aftermath. However this may also be an appropriate resource for other exam boards who use Journey’s End as a set text in both A-Level and GCSE.
