This is a 24-page book study based on the text “Farmhouse” by Sophie Blackall. This book has received a notable mention on the 2023 CBCA book list.
This is a truly unique book about a huge family who lives, loves and looks after a farmhouse, which was later discovered in real-life by the author.
This is a unit of work, consisting of a range of activities designed to complement using Farmhouse in the classroom. The activities are largely open-ended so would suit any primary-aged group of students.
The unit contains:
-
a comprehension guide, targeting the following skills: literal comprehension, inferential comprehension, figurative language, main idea, comparing and contrasting, cause and effect and author purpose.
-
suggested answers to comprehension questions.
-
a vocabulary booster booklet, requiring students to use context to decode the meaning of new words, look up dictionary meanings and use words in new sentences.
-
a book review.
-
a grammar task exploring nouns, verbs and adjectives, using examples from the text.
-
a range of ten literature circle task cards, designed to be printed and laminated. Tasks are independent with minimal prep. Tasks include a high degree of student choice to promote high engagement.
-
A webquest, including suggested websites, about the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) people, the traditional custodians of the setting of Farmhouse.
All activities are designed to be independent, so they are perfect for inclusion in Literature Circle rotations.
