Game-togenesis is a highly flexible revision game. Game-togenesis allows the teacher to review understanding of the key concepts taught in a fun, competitive and interactive activity. The game has been developed and refined in the classroom for over two years. Game-togenesis is a perfect way to engage all learners, as all players are actively involved in reading and answering questions. The game is appropriate for the ages of 11+. I regularly use Game-togenesis as a revision tool for Year 7 (11 years of age) right through to A-level (18 years of age +).
The game enables the teacher to create subject specific questions related to the topics they have taught, making Game-togenesis a highly flexible classroom resource.
Game play:
2 to 8 players.
The game board is designed around a plant cell and depicts the stages of meiosis in the production of gametes (pollen and ovules). The first person to collect all 23 chromosomes wins the game. 23 is the haploid number of chromosomes in a human. Once the game is won, the remaining players work out what species they have become. Haploid chromosome numbers are located on the perimeter of the game template’s cell wall, in the interstitial fluid.
Download instructions:
1. Download the game ‘Game-togenesis Board’ template pdf.
2. Print the file as A1. You will need to glue the separate A4 sheets together to create the A1 size (unless you have an A1 printer).
3. Download the 'Evolution or Extinction' file, print and cut out the cards. Alternatively, download the ‘Evolution and Extinction for Stickers’ file. Print the ‘Evolution and Extinction for Stickers’ file onto A4, 21 self-adhesive address labels paper and then stick the 52 labels onto a deck of playing cards.
4. Download the ‘Blank Template Question Cards’ file on MS word; write your questions and print. Alternatively, download the ‘Sticker Template No Borders’ file, write your questions then print on self-adhesive labels (21 per A4) and then stick them onto playing cards.
5. Download the 'Game-togenesis Instructions' file and read.
6. You'll need a die and four markers (I use treasury tags to represent chromosomes).
7. Hand out 4 pieces of paper and a pen so the players can record which chromosome they win.
