Based on an exercise I spotted in an antique maths textbook, this exercise is designed to build confidence in writing algebraically. Students are presented with pairs of questions: in each pair, one question involves numbers, and the equivalent question involves algebra. The idea is that if they know how to do it with numbers, then they just do the same thing with the algebra. This should be an accessible introduction to algebra, drawing on students’ existing skills.
