Five lessons based around the KS1 reading skills using the text The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark by Jill Tomilinson. The activities are designed to build fluency and stamina in reading, bridging the gap from phonics to reading for pleasure.

These first five lessons include;
Exploring key vocabulary that appears in the text. This is done through acting, games and activities, pictures word maps.
Retrieving key information from text and pictures to answer questions, explain reasoning and make predictions.
Decoding the text, retrieving information, labelling and drawing pictures to show understanding.
KS1 SATs style questions to help children become more familiar with how these look and how to answer them.
All resources are on powerpoints and can be used in lessons on the whiteboard or can be printed as a scaffold/support for children to work on or stick in books. There is also teacher notes attached to each slide which will help you tailor these lessons for your children and provide scaffold or challenge. There are green bubbles on some slides which act as challenges in a mixed year group class or when there is a range of need.
