LGBT+ Lesson: Standing up for Equality

This lesson introduces the impact of bullying and discrimination against LGBT+ people before supporting students to describe how people have stood up for equality and how we can all stand up to bullying. The lesson builds their confidence in challenging discrimination in school and generates ideas for creating an LGBT+ inclusive school.

Through a range of interactive activities, with differentiated options provided, students will not only know what others have done to create social change and to support individuals facing discrimination but be empowered to challenge discrimination and change the culture of their school.

• Starter discussion on an inspiring Audre Lourde quote
• Clear definitions of LGBT+
• Video activity on the impact of bullying and how students can stand up to homophobia
• Matching activity with inspiring figures who have stood up for equality in different ways
• Generating ideas for creating a more inclusive school
• Role play on challenging discrimination and supporting their friends
• Pledges to stand up for equality

The lesson suitable for KS3 and can be adapted using our differentiated activity sheet for KS4 . The lesson is linked to the KS3 PSHE curriculum and also supports work on SMSC, British Values and RSE and helps schools meet their Ofsted and statutory obligations.
