Celebrate Matariki with this Level 1 Matariki Pop Up Star Art unit.
This unit provides an introduction and exploration of tinting a colour (yellow) with white and shading a colour (blue) with black. It explores the celebration of Matariki in a creative, meaningful way by enabling children to choose a star they can relate to. Tamariki learn about the meaning of each star of the Matariki constellation and choose one for their picture in celebration of Matariki.
They cut the star out of corrugated cardboard and learn how to tint a colour (yellow) with white by painting it. They create a dark sky background on a piece of A4 cartridge paper by shading a colour (blue) with black. When dry, the star is attached to the background with a concertina-folded piece of paper to make it pop up from the background.
