I use this exercise in applied science to address need for 'complex calculations'. It is a relatively simple exercise to measure the palm area and compare it to total body surface area. This is taken from the medical field as an estimation of skin surface for burns, but could also be used for considering heat loss. You can make as much or a little as you wish out of it, comparing gender, body types, ethnicity (the original paper was written because western calculations were wrong for Indian subjects). Some care may be required for body-concious students....

This looks like a very interesting resource and I like the fact it uses a "real life situation" to use th emaths.

This is a very interesting resource which would make a great investigation for KS4 Statistics, students are required to do a variety of measurements and then calculate the standard deviation before making some conclusions. The notes are very clear and detailed. The context is really interesting and is easily extended if you want to make more of a lesson out of this. Thank you for sharing.
