10 Files for the teaching of measuring skills and data collection and presentation. Suitable for Year 4-5 but can easily be adapted to suit a more / less able group or different age group. Includes:
1. Measuring mass - encourages estimation of mass before measuring, a tricky but worthwhile for younger children. More able can convert between units.
2. Measuring volume / capacity - designed for measuring cylinders but can be adapted to suit available equipment. Includes activities to both read scales and fill containers to a given volume.
3. Measuring length - choosing suitable measuring equipment and accurate measuring. Extension sheet to introduce mixed units and conversion.
4. Simple recording sheet for the height of a plant to get the idea of data collection and recording.
For data collection and presentation:
1. Shoe size - simple tally chart of shoe sizes in the class and bar chart for presentation.
2. Pencil case classification - sorting objects into material properties - tally and bar chart. Will create interesting opportunities for group work, discussion and feedback.
3. Tennis ball - 2 Investigations into number of bounces from different heights and on different surfaces. Will reinforce skills learnt in measuring work. Tally chart and bar chart. Can be adapted to introduce the concept of averages to a more able group if required.
4. Variation (2 files)- collection of data - eye colour / height / hair colour / rolling tongue from the class and presenting bar chart. Can be used as an introduction to work on continuous and discontinuous variation.
