2 informal letters for Holes by Louis Sachar. To be completed after chapter 9/18. The first is a letter home not wanting his parents to worry about him and the second is an honest letter explaining what Camp Green Lake is really like.

Documents include a model text/WAGOLL of a informal letter, a success criteria that is differentiated 3 ways and a ‘fix it’ activity sheet but spellings, punctuation and grammar aimed at Year 5.

Resource also includes why the model text is greater depth at Year 5 along with examples of success criteria. This resource should be used alongside your own planning in a sequence of lessons on the adventure story Holes.

  1. Read through the model text. Discuss as a class/pairs what are the features of a informal letter? What do the children like or dislike about this piece of writing?
  2. Look through and discuss the Success Criteria. Give children an appropriate criteria and ask them to mark the text given. Does it include all the features? This could either be colour coded, underlined, ticked off etc.
  3. Fix the mistake activity; with a focus on spelling, punctuation and verb tense.
  4. Write their own informal letter and self/peer mark using the success criteria given.

The resource comes in a simple Word format so that it can be adapted if necessary.
