If you want to encourage children in Year 5 to be more independent by including a wider range of skills in their writing or practise a specific target then these will help. There are 8 sheets, each with writing targets and a given example.

Cut these Year 5 National Curriculum writing skills up into strips and place them somewhere in your classroom. Then encourage children to take a particular skill. (By colour-coding them, you may find that telling children to go to the red target is easier.)

Children will learn to independently challenge themselves in any subject lesson by choosing these slips as an additional way they have looked to improve their work by including a wider range of skills.
