This is an introduction to Unit 4 Enquiries into Current Research in Health and Social Care. Included is a short booklet to introduce the unit structure and how assessments work, key terms (student research task) the purpose of research and its benefits, some ideas for topics and a case study task to kick start the unit.
There is also 3 PowerPoints to explain qualitative and quantitative research methods, primary and secondary research and the importance of being valid, reliable, non-bias and ethical.
Also included is a short starter task, a research task on the different methodologies and their advantages and disadvantages and a practice task to allow the students to start to develop their research skills. Definitions for key terms included to support the teacher.
I found it took the students a little while to understand that they were critiquing the research methods used rather than the article itself, once they had established this then they where able to carry out research more effectively. This introductory work enabled them to develop their understanding of research methods and the importance in relation to health and social care.
