As part of Assessment for Learning many classteachers now encourage the children in their classes to assess their own work - have they achieved the lesson objective? Are they happy with their work, or could they do better? The ’smiley faces’ are for display and help reinforce the need to self assess. At the end of each lesson, the children can stamp (or draw) a face and then add the mouth. A smile, a straight line or a wiggly line (personally I don’t like sad faces).

A simple way for formative feedback from students. Less work than photocoptying labels and having to glue in. Than you for the idea.
