This is a literacy resource I created based on the book “Silly Billy” by Anthony Browne. I used this book as part of a larger author study on Anthony Browne.
I have found “Silly Billy” to be a really useful text in both a literacy context and also for students who may experience anxiety. It teaches students that worrying is ok, and encourages solutions to solving problems.
This is very comprehensive, cross-curricular resource which covers reading goals, as well as writing, speaking and listening, grammar, independent literacy skills, visual literacy, comprehension and wellbeing.
The unit is presented as a PDF slideshow with all resources included. Resource includes:
-
a background to the unit
-
outcomes
-
discussion prompts to allow students to “tune-in” to the book
-
shared reading component with step-by- step comprehension questions focussing on visual literacy, inferential and literal comprehension as well as students connection to text
-
a background to the history of worry dolls and their development in Guatemala
-
tips for dealing with worries for students experiencing anxiety
-
grammar focus on similes and metaphors
-
ten literacy centre tasks designed to consolidate student understanding of the text and build engagement with reading.
The unit of work is presented in a PDF so that formatting does not change with uploading.
