This is a HUGE 170+ page unit of work based on the text “The Arrival” by Shaun Tan. I use this text with my Stage Three class in both a shared reading and small group setting. I have integrated this unit of work with History and Geography units based on migration and multi-culturalism.

Resources included:

  • huge shared reading interpretation guide with page-by-page interpretation suggestions as well as reflection questions for students
  • student workbook with 20 different independent tasks based on the text. All tasks require comprehension and reflection, and many are integrated with Creative and Visual Arts
  • a multiple intelligences task grid with an additional 20 independent tasks for students to complete based on the text
  • a set of comprehension worksheets, accessing both literal and inferential levels of understanding as well as text-to-self connections. Worksheets are organised by sections to match the book so students can work through these at their own pace
  • a classroom display based on themes in “The Arrival”
  • work samples to demonstrate to students how to complete tasks
