Pupils are taught The Big Lunch Street Party song in preparation for their community event. To introduce the topic, they are invited to explore their school site and makes notes around the five senses and the different things they can see, hear, taste, small and touch. Pupils are asked what different sounds they heard, so as to hone in on their auditory sense. They can also be shown examples of concerts at the Eden Project.
Likes and dislikes are discussed, before the class sings the Street Party song and taps along to the beat. Pupils are invited to make up their own verses and perform to the rest of the class. They then discuss music’s role in community events, how it can bring people together and what is needed for successful performance. These activities and resources offer a challenge-based approach to learning about music and performance or as part of a cross-curricular extension/enrichment programme.
