Benefits to teachers:

  1. High-level lessons on five of the short stories in the anthology pitched at students with A and A* grade targets.
  2. A-grade level essay plans and thesis statements.
  3. A05 Critical papers on each of the short stories.

Note to teacher: This A-Level scheme of work was taught in comparison with The Great Gatsby (which students had already been taught). The intention being that they were working towards a comparative coursework essay on the key themes of both texts. However, lessons can be adapted to take out the mentions to The Great Gatsby, if not appropriate.

  • This scheme does not study the short story anthology in order, nor does it focus on every story in the anthology. The stories focussed on in this scheme are: The Snow Child; The Tiger’s Bride; The Courship of Mr. Lyon; The Bloody Chamber; Wolf Alice.
  • The ‘lessons’ are more ‘topics’ or ‘stories’ rather than standalone lessons and therefore may take longer than a traditional one-hour lesson.
