This is a study of population trends of Phnom Penh. It traces the origin of the city; the growth phase resulting from its selection as the Khmer capital; the influences of France during the French Protectorate period;. the Independence phase; the Khmer Rouge/Pol Pot years (reference) and the recovery phase. This unit can standalone as an urban study/population change through time. It has cross curriculum potential because it interrelates with the events of history. It also links with parts 1 & 3 in the Phnom Penh series. Research worksheets are provided as attachments which can be used for independent/homework activities. They could be projected and used within the classroom. The included population graphs indicate the rise and fall and recovery of population in Phnom Penh. In essence this city has developed to reveal the characteristics of many world cities. It has an inner Central Business District; Inner suburbs; outer suburbs with aspects of urban sprawl.
