This PowerPooint lesson guides students through the three scenes that show Jessica planning to leave her father Shylock in Act 2 scenes 3, 4 and 5. Time is given to considering the context to the Jewish community in Venice, and in particular the risks Jessica is taking in leaving her father’s house to marry a Christian. The lesson considers the skill of the writer in manipulating the sympathies of the audience with relation to the character of Shylock, encouraging an ambivalent response to Shylock’s position, predicament and attitudes towards the Christians. The lesson closes with a question about the presentation of Jessica, asking that students consider how she is viewed by others, how she speaks about her father and how her father treats her.
