Have you heard of the Coorong? No! That's not all that surprising. You're not on your own. Even most people in South Australia have little knowledge of the Coorong and its probably within a few hours' journey. Some may know where it is but most don't know what it is. Outside Australia those interested in coastal and inland water studies know about the Coorong. Those keenly interested in migratory birds will most likely know about the Coorong. Those involved in World Heritage-listings will know because the Coorong is a World Heritage-listed site. Hopefully that is enough to entice you to take up a study of the Coorong in this 3 part series. This first part will introduce the Coorong by concentrating on location and formation. Be prepared for changing sea levels, the role of river and coastal systems and the importance of a fringing elongated area of coastal dunes and a long sea beach forming an essential barrier. There are attachments - one in colour and the other in black and white. Once you know about formation and location you can continue further investigations of this unique area. If you are not from South Australia then you might consider putting the Coorong on your list of places to visit. At Upper Primary levels this can be used as a familiarisation unit. At a more detailed interpretation unit it can be used at Secondary levels in Geography/Environmental Studies.
