In literature, a theme is a central idea or multiple ideas explored and expressed implicitly throughout a text. Themes can be broad universal issues or communicate more specific concerns or ideas.

In this Themes Literary Module there are 22 questions (long answer, short answer, multiple-choice, and grid-matching - complete with answers), which students will use to identify the themes within The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

Students are asked to explain their reasoning behind some of their answers to the questions.

This resource also contains a 12-question Assessment (complete with answers) to test the student’s understanding of theme ideas and concerns.

There are two Google Slideshows - A condensed history of the Holocaust, and a look at John Boyne’s biography and why he wrote The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, to aid the student’s understanding of the book.
