This lesson/presentation explores the "witch-hunt effect" by comparing two real life stories: the satanic panic cases of child abuse in the 1980's in California (for which you will need to show clips from Sean Penn's documentary, Witch Hunt) and the Salem Witch Trials in the 17th century. I look at how the witch-hunt effect can give rise to extreme miscarriages of justice and emphasize the role that critical thinking should play in the criminal justice system.
