Rental Housing Theme Unit

The theme of the unit is rental housing - this covers all aspects of renting a property, from what is required prior to renting a property, legalities, financial responsibilities, tenants’ rights and responsibilities, the different forms an applicant/tenant needs to know about, organisations that support tenants/people looking for housing, and searching for and applying for a rental property. The unit them moves into the current housing crisis in Victoria (and Australia) as well as exploring homelessness.

This VCAL Literacy bundle covers all 8 learning outcomes for Foundation and Intermediate levels. There are many opportunities to cover the oracy learning outcomes throughout the unit as well. There is an assessable task per learning outcome included, with rubrics, graphic organisers and a PowerPoint to teach the skills needed to complete each task.

Included in the unit:

  • Reading and writing tasks for practical purposes, knowledge, self-expression and public debate
  • Rubrics for all tasks
  • Teaching notes and links to curriculum
  • Exemplars to annotate
  • PowerPoint slides that cover the explicit teaching of each skill

The teaching notes document is 44 pages long, which includes all curriculum links, tasks, graphic organisers and exemplars needed (provided in both PDF and Word formats for editing).

The student notes documents have been split into each curriculum area and numbered for ease of printing/disseminating or uploading to your online platform for students (provided in both PDF and Word formats for editing).

The PowerPoint is 68 slides and includes all learning outcomes and teaching slides for you and your students.

This unit should take approximately a whole term to teach, but the timeframe is dependent on your SWL requirements and your individual cohort’s needs.

This bundle is a huge time saver for you and is sure to engage your students with the housing theme linked to a real-life topic students will be interested in and want to invest effort into.
