This teaching resource explores the world of broadcasting, taking students on a journey, from the days when Chinese soldiers communicated over long distances with fire and smoke to today, where we are at the cusp of object-based media.

What is object-based media? And how will it change the way we watch or listen to media content in the near future? Dr De Mi, an electronics engineer and researcher at the University of Surrey, answers these questions and more, giving students a taste of where a career in electrical of electronic engineering could take them.

The activity sheet includes discussion points - eight questions the students can answer in groups or individually. There are also links to resources relating to 5G, including a video explaining Dr De Mi’s research.
