Windrush Stories for Schools

Windrush Stories for Schools is a brand new, freely downloadable audio resource for primary and secondary schools.

Featuring interviews with members of the Windrush Generation and their descendants, Windrush Stories for Schools provides a unique insight into the lives, challenges and achievements of people who left the Caribbean to make their lives in Britain.

Interviewees include the Rt Hon Diane Abbot MP, Prof Benjamin Zephaniah, Sister Ina Spence, cricketer Cecil Wright and footballer Brendon Batson OBE, who can be heard describing their personal stories, talking about life in the Caribbean, first impressions of the UK, experiences of prejudice, the importance of community, and the positive impact of Caribbean culture on life in Britain.

Information sheets about the Caribbean, the Empire Windrush, Life in Britain for the Windrush Generation, and the Windrush Scandal, together with teaching notes relating to English, Geography, History and Citizenship activities, ensure Windrush Stories for Schools is ideal for use in lessons for Key Stages 1,2 and 3, in assemblies. on Windrush Day and during Black History month.

These resources were produced by the Prison Radio Association, a charity that uses audio to change lives. The project was funded through a Windrush Day Grant from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government
