Fourteen 45 minute activities designed to improve confidence in accessing the KS2 reading paper. Includes group work around the 2019 paper, paired work around the 2022 paper and an independent test for the 2023 paper before an engaging activity predicting this year’s themes.
For the 2019 paper, there is a reciprocal reading task for each text and then pupils work in groups to answer the questions. This last six sessions total.
For the 2022 paper, pupils work in pairs to read each text and then mark a completed paper (provided). This lasts three sessions total.
For the 2023 paper, a one hour session is needed for pupils to complete the test. They spend the next two sessions marking the paper as a class. This lasts three sessions total.
There are then two more sessions exploring the reading papers of the past and predicting the theme for this year’s paper, including pupils designing their own cover.
I have also included a break down of the tests since 2023 and the text types covered based on my interpretation.
You will need to download or access reading test materials for the last three years from the DFE website.
