The WAGOLL is pitched at the Greater Depth level, though could be used whole class as a stimulus to support sentence structure and to develop use of vocabulary and language.
The scene takes place in the trenches of World War One, focusing on the protagonists of Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Private Peaceful’. It takes place over a three minute time period, counting down to the order to go over the parapet and into the trenches.
Also included is a figurative language word-bank, giving examples of hyperbole, pathetic fallacy, personification, metaphor and simile.
The WAGOLL focuses on
- Figurative language (hyperbole, pathetic fallacy, personification, metaphor and simile)
- ‘Show, not tells’ for character emotion
- Cohesion within and across paragraphs
- Dialogue to advance the action
- Creating atmosphere and character through descriptions
