This is an interactive lesson focusing on the different methods used by forensic scientists to determine the time of death.
This includes:
Algor mortis (body temperature)
Rigor mortis (muscle contraction)
Livor mortis (colour of skin after death)
Entomology (study of insects)
Decomposition
Students click on each link to gain information about each method. The information is in the form of text, diagrams and videos.
Students can summarise this information in their notes if the teacher wishes.
The students are then given information about 5 deceased people and the state of the body when found.
Working in pairs or groups, students use the information to predict and approximate the time of death (they are given a current time and work backwards).

Three lessons which focus on the forensic science element of the topic.
The first lesson looks at the role of microorganisms in decomposition. This is a recap session, looking at the carbon cycle.
Lesson 2 introduces the idea of using body temperature and rigor mortis to determine time of death.
lesson 3 finishes the topic looking at the role of bacteria and insects in decomposition. This links to succession which had been studied previously.

My students often are overwhelmed with the thought of preparing for their mock and IGCSE exams.
I have reduced the specification to simple points to enable the students to produce notes on each section.
To start with, they read through the statements and traffic-light colour code each section to determine areas they really need to focus on.
I advise they work through each point, producing summarised notes to support their learning. I have included a QR code to scan which leads to a page describing each specification point. The majority are in note form but there a few videos for trickier topics.
Students can successfully build up a series of revision notes and feel confident with their understanding of the course.
60 flash cards with exam-style questions for students to prepare. The questions cover all of the topics in unit 5 and give students a chance to prepare model answers for each of these in preparation for the A level exam.
Once completed, my students check their responses with the model answers and then laminate and use as a revision tool.
The escape room is online and interactive, using the platform genially. No personal information is collected from the students.
The questions throughout the game are based on a knowledge of the characteristics of organisms, with a range of questions. Students should have some knowledge of the points listed below (or access to their notes/textbook for research purposes.
