Ten-Frame On the Bus

(0)
A multi-purpose IWB resource designed to develop children’s early number knowledge using a ten-frame. Children are invited to say the amount of people (blue counters) upstairs, downstairs and altogether, and calculate one more and one less shown on the ten- frame and or how many more blue counters would make ten. Children are invited to say how many people (blue counters) they can see on the bus. They might also be asked to add one more or one less to the bus or how many more would make 10. This resource aligns well with WhiteRose Maths Units for EYFS and Yr1 although is not endorsed by WRM. As well as supporting early number recognition skills this game strengthens compositional knowledge of amounts within 10. This IWB Maths resource can work well as part of whole class teaching, small guided group work and or 1-1 adult-led teaching and learning. In addition to using this resource on the IWB, a selection of slides could be printed off and used during continuous learning provision. This may provide great opportunities for further number exploration of composition of ten. Children can be invited to place counters/cubes to represent varying numbers of people on the bus. For example, five people upstairs and two downstairs equals 7 OR four people upstairs and three people downstairs also equals 7. This is an ideal resource to develop children’s early counting skills and strengthen their compositional understanding.
