A fully differentiated lesson that looks at a Paper 2-style AQA English Literature unseen poetry questions (on Autumn by Alan Bold and Today by Billy Collins and reviews the presentation of Autumn and Spring in both poems and the use of language and structure in the poems before students review their own answers and then self-assess each other’s work. Easily adaptable for other exam questions and for other exam boards. I’m really proud of this one!
A fully differentiated lesson that looks at a Paper 1-style AQA English Literature question (extract and question included) on A Christmas Carol and reviews the presentation of Scrooge as unsympathetic, the use of language in the extract and how the extract can be linked to historical context before students review their own answers and then self-assess each other’s work. A full day of activities for students working in groups on a newspaper project for their school. A fully differentiated and resourced lesson that focuses on the Inspector’s last speech in An Inspector Calls and how the Birlings initially react to his leaving the play. We analyse the use of language in the Inspector’s speech and explore the emotions and thoughts of the different characters one Goole leaves. An ideal lesson for KS4 students prepare for English Literature exams and easily adaptable for KS3. Worth a download!
Love and Relationships lesson. A fully differentiated lesson on Walking Away by Cecil Day-Lewis, that analyses how the narrator remembers seeing his son leave him and start to become more independent. Includes key words, key quotes, differentiated activities and visually engaging and interesting resources for students preparing for AQA English Literature Paper 2 at KS4, but can also be easily adapted for KS3 students as well.
A fully differentiated and resourced lesson based around the characters of Eriic Birling and Eva Smith from the beginning of Act 3 onwards. We look at how Eric is connected to Eva, how his relationships with his father and mother change, and how Priestley shows the Birling family breaking apart as the truth is revealed to all the characters. An excellent lesson for AQA English Literature Paper 2 students, but easily adaptable for other exam boards and for KS3 classes.
A fully differentiated and resourced lesson that focuses on the character of Eric Birling in JB Priestley’s An Inspector Calls throughout Acts 1 and 2 before we find out how he is connected to Eva Smith’s death in Act 3. The lesson allows students to work in groups to analyse key quotes from and about Eric in the first two acts and to build up a knowledge bank on the character. We look at ideas about the American Dream, and how the Great Depression impacted on American society after the Roaring Twenties. Additionally, we look at how Steinbeck introduces setting and character at the start of the novel and how these are linked to the idea of the American Dream. Designed for Literature students but easily adaptable for younger ages.

Focussing on the character of the Nurse from Romeo and Juliet, we look at how she is presented to us as an audience, how she acts as both a plot device and comic relief, and we analyse her use of language as well. In Act 2 Scene 5 Shakespeare takes advantage of dramatic irony to make the audience laugh, and we explore his use of language in this scene as well. An excellent lesson for AQA English Literature students preparing for their exams, but easily adaptable for other exam boards and other year groups as well.
