We focus on the opening sentences to speeches and think about the most effective ways of beginning speeches depending on the purpose and audience of the speech being written. Students are given topics and audiences and are challenged to write their own speech openings using modelled examples. Edexcel English Language 2.0 Paper 1 Section A lesson that supports students in analysing a famous speech for language techniques and then provides them with a framework for writing their own pieces. Focuses on Abraham Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg address. Despite being only two minutes long, its careful use of language has made it one of the most memorable and famous speeches in history. A fully differentiated lesson for KS3 and KS4 classes that analyses Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg address and uses it as a stimulus for students preparing for the Edexcel Spoken Language element of the GCSE English Language course. English Edexcel 2.0 Paper 1 non-fiction writing lesson for KS4, useful for English Language Paper 1 Question 7/8 preparation. Focuses on review writing in non-fiction writing. Students work on a magazine project, thinking of a central subject or interest to use as a stimulus for creating different writing pieces. Students analyse an example review provided and use this to help plan and write out reviews for their magazines.
