Mental Maths Tests Year 5 / 6

Ideal starter mental maths tests or quizzes. NO PREP! This pack contains 15 Mental Arithmetic PowerPoint Speed Tests, originally designed for Upper Key Stage 2 (KS2) - Y5 and Y6 (Primary 6 and 7 and other equivalents) but might also suit some early KS3 classes for revision and consolidation. They could be used as part of SATs preparation too. UPDATE: Now included in PDF versions as well as the original PowerPoints. Money calculations are in UK Pounds, but dollar versions of all resources are also included. Students enjoy trying to beat their previous best score. These informal tests are split across 3 files and are designed to be shown on the whiteboard, with children recording answers in jotters or on paper. In each quiz there’s one question to a slide so children can focus on it for a few seconds before the next one comes up. The question slides are plain and uncluttered to minimise distractions. You can run the PowerPoint presentation on a timer if you wish - alternatively click it on yourself, perhaps allowing a little longer for more challenging questions. Each test features 20 calculations involving a variety of mathematical skills and knowledge. Alternatively, use the PDF versions. At the end of each test, there follows the same 20 slides repeated, with the answer added clearly. Students can mark their own or a partner’s work to cut down on your workload. If short of time, you can whizz through the answers but each answer appearing with its question like this allows for important discussions about strategies. Concepts include: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, Times Tables, Doubling and Halving, Negative Numbers, Multiplying and Dividing by 10 and 100, Place Value, Decimals, Percentages, Fractions, Money, Measure (including Area and Perimeter, Time, Length), Angles. The PowerPoint files are editable should you wish to amend any wording or change the odd question to better suit your class. Differentiation: I’ve called this Set A rather than used any other identifier to help facilitate the use of my Set B (originally designed for Lower Key Stage 2) with lower ability children within the same class without children being aware of the age level of the questions. These are Key Stage 2 (KS2) Year 5 and Year 6 (Y5 / Y6) place value printable activities for numbers up to 6 and 7 digit develop understanding of place value, while practising mental maths. There are 72 self-checking maths trails (36 up to 6 digit numbers and 36 up to 7 digit numbers) to make into reusable activity boards or simply print as worksheets (versions also included without the final answer). Ideal as main lesson tasks, starters, early finishers, home learning, homework and revision. PDF format. (In Scotland, this suits Second Level Maths, Primary 6 and 7.) A fun activity that can be used as a competitive game or an individual challenge Differentiation: In addition to there being 2 different levels here (up to 6 or 7 digits), the last 6 trails in each set (trails 31-36) are a little less challenging than the first 30, helping less able students to experience success without drawing attention to the level Print as many A4 boards as you require (printing on card recommended), laminate for regular use and have students complete trails with whiteboard pens Consider printing and/or laminating back-to-back to save resources A5 worksheet versions of the trails (two trails per A4 page) are included with the answer removed, which you might want to use for classwork or homework without laminating Separate final answer key versions included (for use with worksheet versions) Full answer versions also included for speedy checking by student or teacher if required Alternatively students could use a calculator to help them see where they have gone wrong. Students love using these trails, fixing any errors for themselves. They could work in pairs or individually and choose whether to time themselves or race against their friends.   How do they work? The trails each feature 12 addition and subtraction calculations (practising a variety of vocabulary for the operations) to consolidate place value. A start and end number are printed on each card, so students can work from left to right down the rows, adding and subtracting different size numbers, until they reach the end, where they can check if they arrived at the correct final number.   These trails are available alongside other place value games and activities for large numbers and decimal numbers in a popular bundle: KS2 Place Value Activities Bundle   Some of my other popular KS2 Maths / Numeracy resources: Mental Maths Bundle Multiplication / Division Bundle   Please visit FullShelf Resources to explore more. Speed Distance Time Activities

Designed for an Upper Key Stage 2 (KS2) Year 6 class but suitable for early KS3 Year 7 for revision, these 6 Speed, Distance and Time printable Four in a Row games (metric units) are fun alternative activities to additional textbook work on this maths topic, after pupils know the formulae D=SxT, S=D÷T and T=D÷S. ANSWER VERSIONS of all games are included. All games are in PDF format. Contains a more simple (one star) and more challenging (two star) version for each of: Distance Travelled Average Speed Time Taken In addition to featuring generally more challenging calculations, the two-star versions of each require conversion between units in some cases. Print and laminate the boards for regular use. I recommend printing boards in A3 if possible (or enlarging them to A3 on the copier) but A4 will be okay too. Pupils work as pairs against pairs or one against one to get four correct answers in a row - horizontally, vertically or diagonally. They roll a die each time to find which column to pick a calculation from (the columns are numbered 1-6). If there are no calculations left in the column whose number they have rolled, they either skip a go or roll again (depending on the rules you have chosen). Pupils write their answers on the board with a whiteboard marker. They could either use a different coloured pen to record answers on the board or add an initial or symbol if using the same coloured pen as their opponent. I hope your students enjoy playing these games. What about this festive mental maths puzzle pack? A bundle of Upper Key Stage 2 (KS2) activities for finding Fractions of Quantities: differentiated Four in a Row Games and Active Card Game. Also known as Fractions of a Set / of a Group / of Whole Numbers etc. Originally made for Year 5 and Year 6. Great for lesson starters, early finishers tasks and revision. Includes: 6 Four-in-a-Row Games (3 levels, 2 of each) 54 Card Printable Team Treasure Hunt (Differentiated) Answer keys included. Please check the individual resource pages and previews to see if the calculations provide an appropriate range of challenge for your students. These activities were made for revision and consolidation in Year 5 and 6 but might suit other years too. You can also purchase these 2 resources as part of my bigger Fractions Activities BUNDLE, along with Hidden Word Puzzles Worksheets for a variety of Fractions concepts. If you prefer, you can also purchase the Fractions Puzzles Worksheets as part of my Fractions, Decimals and Percentages BUNDLE MORE INFORMATION - FOUR IN A ROW: Print and laminate the Four in a Row boards for regular use. The boards were originally designed in A3 to work especially well with larger groups but you can scale it down to print in A4 if required or preferred. There are 6 game boards, two for each level of challenge, indicated with a star system, with one star being the least challenging. The one star version includes only unit fractions of small numbers. The two star version includes fractions of larger two-digit numbers, while the three star version progresses to fractions of three and four-digit numbers. Students work strategically as pairs against pairs or one against one to get four correct answers in a row - horizontally, vertically or diagonally. They roll a dice each time to decide from which column to pick a calculation (the columns are numbered 1-6). Students write their answers on the board with a dry-wipe marker. MORE INFORMATION - TREASURE HUNT: This can be played multiple times in a lesson or across several lessons as groups can use different card sets each time. Teams complete a treasure hunt-type chain of fractions calculations, followed by a ‘Find the Target Number’ mental maths challenge, using a mixture of the four operations. There are 54 double-sided cards, forming sets of 6 cards for 9 teams. A key feature is the chance to involve lower ability students in a fun whole class activity to give them a boost of confidence without it being obvious their calculations are less challenging (3 of the sets are at an easier level). Full instructions included. Students collaborate on a treasure hunt type maths trail and when they’ve collected all 5 answers, they are given a target, which they must make using 3 given numbers. You can print and laminate the cards in batches of 3 sets, so if you don’t require them all, you needn’t print them. The cards should be printed double-sided (they’ve been laid out to facilitate this). I print by selecting the ‘2-Sided Short Edge (Top)’ option. However, if you can only print one-sided, print all the even-numbered pages, replace the paper, and print the odd-numbered pages on the back. Give each team their ‘Start’ card. Spread out all other cards, answer side up. You may wish to remove cards from any set not being used, although this is not necessary. On your signal, teams turn over their Start card and complete the calculation. Each team sends one person to collect the correct answer card, on the other side of which will be their next question and a letter to confirm which team it belongs to. Ensure teams immediately replace any cards not marked with their letter. The process continues until the team have answered all five calculations. On the other side of the final answer card will be a target number, which teams must make, using the numbers printed in boxes in the bottom right corner of 3 of their cards. Use all 3 numbers and only once each, using any of the 4 operations. The first to make their target number wins! Addition and Subtraction Practice

2 Resources
Basic adding and subtracting activities for KS1 (Year 1, Year 2) or Lower KS2 (Year 3, Year 4) children who require practice and revision of basic addition and subtraction (number bonds to 20, addition and subtraction within 20, doubles, near doubles etc). In this BUNDLE there are 15 puzzle worksheets and 36 self-check trails. Both are in PDF format. Both packs in this BUNDLE are also available separately:   Basic Addition and Subtraction Fluency Puzzles Worksheets Designed as fun alternatives to standard worksheets to provide variety and extra practice of addition and subtraction facts beyond Year 1, including some special educational needs contexts (SEN). Students must have basic spelling ability to uncover the 4 or 5-letter hidden words that feature in these calculation puzzles (although clues can be given, of course!). Please check the detailed preview to assess if they will meet your needs. For a full list of the puzzles please the individual resource page. These puzzles work by students looking over completed calculations, hunting for errors. Students often forget or avoid checking their work so it’s great to get them carefully checking in these puzzles! Spotting common errors may help them remember to check their own work. Each puzzle contains 21 completed calculations, with 4 or 5 deliberate errors. There is a letter printed in each box, below the calculation. Students circle all the boxes containing calculation mistakes. When they have finished, they put all the letters together from the circled boxes and rearrange the letters to spell the name of an animal. If students have assembled the correct letters but find the rearranging very challenging, you can have them work in pairs or give them clues, such as the first letter of the word or a fact about the animal. The animal printed on each puzzle is for illustration purposes and is not related to the answer. Answer Keys are located after each puzzle. You can print them for students to self-check if required. You might want to display them instead. TIP: To save printing and to use again and again, why not laminate the puzzles and have students complete them with dry-wipe markers? Alternatively, put the sheets in a dry-erase sleeve.   Adding and Subtracting within 20 Write and Wipe Cards 36 self-check write and wipe trail cards to be laminated for pupils to complete with whiteboard pens or use as worksheets with a difference. Starting at the spider and working their way around in a spiral, children write each answer in the box, creating a running total. The final answer is printed next to the web in the middle of the card so they can see if they have correctly completed it. If not, children can check to see where they have gone wrong. Separate answer keys are also included, should you require them.   YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE… Add and Subtract within 50 Write and Wipe Cards Add and Subtract 9, 10 and 11 Write and Wipe Cards Add and Subtract Multiples of 10 Write and Wipe Cards   Thank you for your interest in my resources. 12 fun festive puzzles worksheets for Key Stage 2 Mental Maths and Literacy / English (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar / SPaG) to use as warm ups, starters, revision, homework or early finisher activities in December. They could also be used as main lesson tasks. With 2 levels of challenge, this BUNDLE provides ideal differentiation in many classes, perfect for meaningful practice at this busy time of year, with no prep required. Some of the puzzles were designed for Year 3 and 4 but these are likely to suit some learners in Year 5 and 6 requiring a simpler level of challenge. On the other hand, the Year 5 / 6 puzzles could provide challenge for more able learners in lower year groups. Full instructions and answer keys included. Click on the links to see more detailed information and previews, or to purchase separately: Christmas Maths Puzzles Christmas Literacy (SPaG) Puzzles CHRISTMAS MATHS PUZZLES: There are 3 Set A Numeracy puzzles that best suit Year 6 and 5 (P7 and P6) and 3 Set B puzzles originally designed for Year 4 (P5) - and Year 3 (P4) if all concepts have been covered. Both sets could be used in the same class for differentiation if required. Set A might also suit some early KS3 classes. They work well at the busy end of term as little preparation is required and they are very flexible and can be left aside and picked up again as required. An engaging alternative to standard worksheets, these Hidden Word / Spot the Mistakes puzzles make ideal starter, early finisher or homework activities for this special time of year. Similar to codebreaker puzzles, a Christmas-related word is revealed after completing mental arithmetic calculations. Each puzzle contains a grid. Within each box is a calculation and a letter. Pupils circle any boxes containing mistakes. Then they assemble letters from the circled boxes to reveal the Christmas word. Puzzles can be completed individually or in pairs / groups. Concepts include: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, Times Tables, Doubling and Halving, Multiplying and Dividing by 10 and 100, Place Value, Negative Numbers, Fractions, Percentages and Decimals (Not all concepts feature in Set B). LITERACY (EDITING / PROOFREADING PUZZLES: KS2 Christmas Editing / Proofreading puzzles. Minimal preparation required (ideal for busy end of term), these 6 fun Literacy / English puzzle worksheets provide practice of a range of Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG) during late November and December. 3 puzzles were originally designed for Year 6 and 5 (P7 and P6) and 3 simpler ones for Year 3 and 4 (P4 and P5). Both sets could be used in the same class for differentiation if required. They could also be used for revision in early KS3. Versions are included with and without a festive background picture. All sentences are Christmas-themed. These puzzles work in a similar way to the maths ones above, a Christmas-related word being revealed after completing the editing work. Each puzzle contains 20 lines of text (or 15 in the simpler ones). Pupils circle any mistakes they spot. If there are 3 or more mistakes in a single line, they highlight the corresponding letter in the grid at the bottom of the page. At the end they rearrange the highlighted letters to reveal the Christmas word. Puzzles can be completed individually or in pairs / groups, with pupils supporting each other and pooling their editing / proofreading skills. Pupils often forget or avoid re-reading their own work to check for errors so it’s great to get them carefully checking in these puzzles. Spotting common spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors may help them remember to check their own work and help them avoid common errors themselves. Some of the aspects of SPaG included: common spelling errors, full stops, capital letters, question marks, commas, colons, speech marks, proper nouns, missing words, repeated words, tenses, subordinate clauses and embedded clauses. Fun puzzles worksheets for Key Stage 2 (Year 4 and especially Year 5 and Year 6), ideal for independent work, early finishers activities, starters, challenge / extension tasks or homework. This BUNDLE contains 16 fun Hidden Word / Spot the Mistakes puzzles worksheets for multiplying and dividing in PDF format and full answer keys. Please check the previews to assess suitability. Fast finishers love being challenged by these challenges, plus they make great collaborative starters too! Why not laminate and use again and again, with students using whiteboard pens? Alternatively, you could place them inside dry-erase sleeves. These puzzles worksheets are great to have on hand throughout the year. The 2 resource packs in this BUNDLE are also available separately: Multiplication Puzzle Worksheets Division Puzzle Worksheets Times Tables 2-10 Times Tables 2-12 Doubles to 50 Doubles to 100 / 2-Digit Doubling Doubling 3-Digit Numbers Multiplying by 10 and 100 Multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000 (including decimals) Multiplying by Multiples of 10 and 100 (including decimals) Division with Table Facts 2-9 Division with Table Facts 2-12 Halving Numbers to 100 Halving 2 and 3 Digit Numbers Halving 3 Digit Numbers Dividing by 10 and 100 Dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 Dividing by Multiples of 10 and 100 An engaging alternative to standard worksheets, they can be completed individually or in pairs / groups. They are similar to codebreaker puzzles, with a maths-related word to be revealed after completing the calculations. Each puzzle contains a grid. Within each box is a calculation and a letter. Students circle any boxes containing errors, then put together the letters from these boxes to reveal a maths word. There is a further challenge question / task at the bottom of the page linked to the hidden word. Students often forget or avoid checking their own work for errors so it’s great to get them carefully checking the calculations in these puzzles. Spotting common errors may help them remember to check their own work and help them avoid common errors themselves. The range of puzzles in this resource is ideal for differentiation and revision and / or to cater for a range of groups and classes across Key Stage 2 and early KS3. Hopefully they’ll be helpful for your teaching over many years. Key Stage 2 starter or warm up activities for Year 4, 5 and 6 maths lessons. This bundle contains 30 mental maths tests or quizzes on PowerPoint presentations for KS2 for regular use throughout the year. No prep! Ideal for differentiation, there are 15 tests at both of the two levels. Each test contains 20 question slides and 20 answer slides. You could use them as part of SATs preparation, as daily / weekly mental starter activities or as part of revision lessons. **Contains: ** SET A: 15 Tests originally designed for Year 5 and 6 SET B: 15 Tests originally designed for Year 4 (and will suit some Year 3) You could use a mixture of the two levels for differentiation in the same class. Please check the individual resource descriptions and previews to check if this will meet your needs. Children enjoy trying to beat their previous best score. These informal tests are split across 6 PowerPoints and are designed to be shown on the whiteboard, with children recording answers in jotters or on paper. At the end of each test, there follows the same 20 slides repeated, with the answer added clearly. Children can mark their own or a partner’s work to cut down on your workload. Additional dollar versions of all 3 PowerPoints are included, where I have amended any questions involving pounds and pence to suit countries using dollars. Quelle heure est-il?. Comprehensive writing activities for an FSL unit on Telling the Time in French (L’heure) / Clocks in French (Les Horloges). Over 100 pages of worksheets and puzzles on 12 AND 24 hour time (l’heure informelle et l’heure officielle), using analogue and digital clocks, in quarter hour and 5 minute intervals. 12 and 24 hour times are on separate pages so you can focus on one or the other or both. Also includes questions and sentences, linked to sporting activities, opening hours and aspects of daily routine. Support pages and full answer keys included. Great also to link maths measurement learning with French. My French basics resources are made for students beginning French and near beginners in KS2 or early KS3 (Years 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8) and equivalents but they may suit others, depending on experience. Please check the previews to assess suitability. PDF format. 107 pages. You can purchase this pack as part of a Telling the Time in French BUNDLE, which also includes a pack of printable games and activities and a presentation and flashcards pack. INCLUDED IN THIS RESOURCE: Whether you are focusing on the 12 or 24-hour clock – or both – there’s plenty to choose from here. Just select the resources you want. The 12 hour versions of each resource can be found first. In almost all cases, these are then followed by 24 hour versions (except for the maze). The “12h” or “24h” in the top right corner will help you identify them. The worksheets and puzzles are at various levels of difficulty, all of them differentiated, to provide plenty of variety and challenge for you to select the most appropriate for the range of ages and abilities that you teach. SUPPORT PAGES: Word mats to display or print for students who require it, for 12 and 24-hour time, and in black and white too. Please note that these support pages are also contained in my printable games packet for this topic. WORKSHEETS: 10 worksheets (with answer keys), all in both 12 AND 24-hour versions, and all differentiated at least two ways using a star system. The 1-star version is the least challenging, for lower ability, younger or less experienced students and almost all of these focus on quarter hour intervals. Many of the 2-star worksheets are in five minute intervals. For Worksheet 4, the 1-star version is in five minute intervals and the 2-star is to the nearest minute, to provide variety and extra challenge. The two “À quelle heure…?” worksheets (Les Activités / Le Transport) are differentiated 3 ways. PUZZLES: There’s an airport puzzle, hidden word puzzle and maze. The airport puzzle is differentiated; the other two are not. The maze also does not have a 24h version.   EXPLORE MORE… French KS2 / KS3 MEGA BUNDLE 1
