Using the backdrop of Drag Racing and owning your first vehicle the simple activates along with budgeting spreadsheets allows your to understand how to maximise your income and predict spending and unpredictable outgoings. Topic: Finance & money Context: Buying a Car This IMI life skills activity will support young people to be able to prepare a cash-flow forecast and to understand the importance of cash flow and how to improve it whilst preparing on saving and budgeting to own your first vehicle.

Automotive themed complete lesson plans x 12 All lessons are based on real life activities with the motor industry as a backdrop, encompassing sub-sectors such as motorsport, motorcycle, heavy vehicle, motor parts, paint and finishing and sales as well as green issues such as vehicle emissions. The rationale behind “Indicate” is to a) introduce students to the various aspects of the motor industries b) allow students to demonstrate a fluency and confidence in a range of “real life” mathematical techniques and processes in an unfamiliar context. Lesson overview & support materials Lesson 1 - Topic: Statistics/Data analysis Context: New Car Sales A data sheet on the sales of new cars in the UK for a selected month and any associated information needed to complete this topic is provided. Lesson 2 - Topic: Finance & Money Context: Buying a Car Lesson 3 - Topic: Shape, Space & Measure Context: Designing a Race Circuit None. Lesson 4 - Topic: Sequences and functions Context: Car Emissions Detailed information (two data tables) and a further handout table provided (for student to complete). Lesson 5 - Topic: Compound Measures Context: F 1 Lap Times A table of F1 lap times for three drivers provided. Lesson 6 - Topic: Budgeting Context: Drag Racing Support material is provided in the form of a table that lists parts and their relative values depending on their quality (high, medium or low). Lesson 7 - Topic: Measures Context: Motorcycle Trip 3 supporting data sheets that includes journey itinerary, journey mileage/kms, motorbike technical details (mpg etc). Lesson 8 - Topic: Shape, Space and Measure Context: Paint Job None. Lesson 9 - Topic: Geometry and Measure Context: Heavy Vehicle None. Lesson 10 - Topic: Angles and Gradients Context: Off Road Technical specifications on 4x4 vehicles included Lesson 11 - Topic: Statistics/Data analysis Context: Vehicle Parts Prepared tables have been produced for students to present their findings and compare tasks Lesson 12 - Topic: Statistics/Data analysis Context: Buying a Motorbike A cash flow chart has been produced for this task for the students to complete

This Employability Skills Toolkit has been developed as a direct response to a need identified by the Retail Automotive Industry. The six modules address the softer skills that are required from education leavers when entering the workplace. Each lesson plan consists of four sections: module content, portfolio activity, a series of MOT questions on the content covered and finally suggestions for additional activity. By working through the toolkit, students will: • gain an overview of the six modules and their outcomes • be able to self-assess and reflect on their skills and knowledge of the world of work • understand what employers expect in terms of behaviour and conduct in the workplace • understand who their customers are and how to build a positive relationship with them • build on team work and effective communication • get hints and tips on problem solving, planning and organisation • receive guidance on applying for a job or training and how to impress during interviews

The automotive industry helps everyone, from delivering food and medicine on time, helping people travel to work and emergency services being able to help in a crisis, the motor industry helps to keep the country moving. Automotive means everything on the UK roads that we use to transport people and things. This includes cars, lorries, motorbikes, busses, electric scooters, vans, and tractors. The IMI helps people working in the motor industry and Sytner Group are Europe’s largest automotive retailer. Together we have been working hard to prepare the industry for the future, but we have run out of ideas! So, we need your help to create a brand-new vehicle that will be ready for 2030. Can you imagine what type of vehicles will be popular in 2030? What will they look like? How will they run? Will they have some fun things in them that haven’t been invented yet? Follow the steps below and help us design a vehicle of the future.
