Perfect for young learners of Spanish and an ideal introduction to the animal kingdom in Spanish. They provide lots of opportunities to learn a range of animals, both***masculine and feminine***, and really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Children can develop their skills in word recognition and recall, pronunciation, speaking, listening and reading in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They’re a great way of introducing the concept of gender, and of looking at the indefinite article in Spanish too. It doesn’t matter is any of the animals don’t feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the card games encourage children to engage happily and confidently with Spanish, to identify cognates and near-cognates, and to begin to link spelling with sound in Spanish. They also help learners begin to work out the meaning of unknown words using both visual clues and prompts, as well as linguistic indicators. There are 24 animals featured, across a series of decks, which enable you to vary and differentiate your games: Deck 1: picture and words cards, with both an image of, and the word for, the animal in Spanish, which is useful for multi-skill learning, particularly in the introductory phase of learning animal vocabulary, and for familiarising students with the written word in Spanish. Deck 2: picture-only cards, useful for vocabulary recall Deck 3: word-only cards in French, useful for word recognition, reading and spelling. Deck 4: word-only cards in English, useful for a variety of games focusing on vocabulary recall Deck 5: both Spanish & English words on a single card, useful for close comparison of language, and recognition of corresponding words Play the games regularly for maximum benefit. I’ve described a range that work well with my classes. Playing against a timer adds some extra fun - can children beat their own time record? An ideal multi-skill language learning activity for developing listening, speaking, reading, writing and spelling skills for French language learners of all ages - in my experience, adult learners really enjoy a few competitive games of bingo too! I’ve described the games as not grade-specific, as the general goal for me is not to learn a lot of French Christmas vocabulary as such, but to work quite specifically on French language skills development. There are 100 grids in total, in both color & BW. The color grids definitely look really good, but can prove expensive to prep - I have sets that I’ve laminated, and students use wipe-free pens, so that the grids can be used many times. Younger learners do tend to prefer the BW grids, taking some additional time to color them in themselves. I often combine that activity with revision of colors, which can work really well too. The games are designed for players to cross off all the words or pictures on their grids in order to win the game. This set comprises the following: 40 picture-only bingo 12-square grids, 4 per page (10 pages) You can give students a random selection of pages, with students selecting the order of grids they play from. You can also cut out the grids, and place them in a small bowl or similar object on tables. Students then select grids randomly from the bowl. For additional challenge, students can play all four grids in a single game. Color and BW 40 words & pictures bingo 12-square grids, 4 per page (10 pages) Color & BW 10 picture-only 30-square grids (A4 portrait format) Distribute the grids among students, several grids per student, which they choose randomly for every game. There should be several winners per game, depending on the size of the group. FRENCH VERBS 500 high-frequency French verbs, listed alphabetically both French-English and English-French - a great learning support resource for French intermediate moving into advanced French learners, and can also be given to beginner French students, providing a language road map with learning goals, outlining the verbs they should ideally know by a specific stage in their learning. There are 42 pages in the book, and all 500 verbs are listed alphabetically French-English and English-French. Verbs that are conjugated with the auxiliary être verb are indicated by (être) following the particular verb. I use the reference book for quick vocabulary quizzes too - either I or a nominated student shouts out a French or English verb, with teams giving the corresponding French or English verb - I’ve found this is a really successful way of avoiding more formal vocabulary tests, while still providing students with frequent opportunity to refresh and embed essential French vocabulary. The books are ideal for***KS4 French*** students, and as a refresher and verb audit for those moving into advanced level A Level French. For UK teachers, these are roughly GCSE / Standard / age 16 examinations moving into advanced level, all examination boards (AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas, SQA). We use the Notes and Next Steps template to think about progress and vocabulary knowledge. Students find this really useful, and do like to map and track their own progress. It can be helpful in guiding and informing whole-group discussion about learning and progress in general, which is a really useful learning activity too - students also note down any new French verbs they learn, enabling them to build a really comprehensive verb vocabulary reference resource. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of English and English numbers in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. The questions have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarize themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling longer words in English. There’s definitely a UK theme running through many of the questions, featuring questions about fish and chips and the Loch Ness Monster for example. The questions range in complexity and challenge, and are great for honing numeracy skills too - especially if calculators are not allowed! The questions are all in English, which in itself is a really useful comprehension activity. Depending on your students, reading the questions together first to check for understanding is a good idea. There’s a question card template too - students genuinely enjoy creating questions for each other, and it allows them to apply language practically and creatively. A great way of getting your students talking without feeling ‘on the spot’, or worried about not getting their pronunciation and accent right in front of the whole class. The Q&A prompt cards offer structured talk opportunities, and focus on vocabulary, structures and general knowledge that they are likely to meet in both the beginning and more intermediate stages of their English learning. My students apply their developing English knowledge creatively and practically by crafting their own questions and answers, using the prompts as speaking frames. With focused and frequent practice, they begin to feel more confident about their language skills, using the Notes and Next Steps pages in the reference book to jot down their ideas. We also use the pages to note how they think their skills are developing, and how well they are beginning to understand fully both the range of vocabulary and grammatical concepts. The language in this set is ideal for advanced beginner English students moving into intermediate English, and feature a range of differentiated questions and answers, addressing various aspects of English, such as f***forming questions, the use of the present and present continuous tenses, word order*** and so on. This is really important for language learners, who often attempt to impose the grammar and structures of their first language onto the new language they are learning. BEGINNER SPANISH INTERMEDIATE SPANISH ADVANCED SPANISH SPANISH-SPEAKING COUNTRIES FLAGS LABEL & COLOR THIS RESOURCE IS CURRENTLY BEING REVISED AND UPDATED - PLEASE CHECK BACK SOON Spanish-speaking countries, capital cities and flags label and color worksheets provide great learning opportunities for any appropriate age group, at any time of the school year, and are definitely the perfect activity for consolidating knowledge of these countries and flags - students definitely really enjoy testing their memory and recreating the flags in color. Students can develop their Spanish language skills, as well as their knowledge of both the Spanish-speaking and wider world, in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. There are 21 countries where Spanish is an official language, and I’ve also included three countries where Spanish is very widely spoken: Gibraltar, Andorra and the USA. There may be a number of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware of, so the games help them fully develop their general awareness, knowledge and understanding of Los países hispanohablantes. There is a country, capital city and flag reference list of all countries and capitals, which students find useful to read through before working on the sheets - I laminate these, because they last for years - one list per small group of 5-6 students is sufficient. It can also be used as a year-round reference resource, which students can file in their workbooks or learning folders. Speaking and writing are language skills that learners tend to find very challenging, and increased engagement with language that requires them to both reproduce language they are already familiar with, and to be creative with that language in order to produce new language is really beneficial. The questions are differentiated, addressing a broad range of ability, which aim to progress all learners. Tenses include present, future, near future, perfect and conditional. Question formats are likewise varied, to ensure maximum opportunity to work with the different ways to ask questions in French. Some questions seek to elicit very similar information, but are asked in different language: this avoids learners simply parroting learned responses to fixed prompts. The prompts are really versatile too, specifically with a focus on speaking and writing. Speaking: As a whole-group activity, distribute the cards among your students, one or several. Ideally, they should walk around the classroom, asking questions, and swapping cards. For pair or small-group work, students can work in a designated area. This really helps them focus closely on the language, and helps learners who are slightly less confident working with a larger group. The cards work particularly well as ice-breakers at the beginning of the school year, refreshers after vacation, prep for both new phase learning, for example intermediate to advanced intermediate, and even advanced intermediate to advanced, as well as exams. Writing: The cards work best in pair or small-group work, where learners have access to reference resources, such as bilingual dictionaries and the internet. The latter will enable them to prepare detailed responses to questions which address general knowledge, rather than their own life. They can then transfer this knowledge to their spoken work. There’s also a 2-page prompts master list. The prompts broadly address the following themes: college life & study; future plans; information technology; where I live; social & environmental issues; France & travel; social activity & daily life.
