A lesson for mixed ability GCSE poetry, viewing The Hero as an unseen poem. This lesson would work well as an introduction to WW1 poetry, unseen poetry or as a poetry analysis lesson. The lesson takes the context of the poem into consideration.

This lesson is for mixed ability AS Level. It begins to examine Duffy’s The Map Woman, with tasks considering emerging theme, employment of poetic techniques and language analysis. The lesson encourages co-operative learning and group discussion. I also used a roll of wallpaper, with a silhouette of ‘the map woman’ for students to label.

SATs-style fiction reading paper, with comprehension questions that assess inference, definition, prediction and retrieval skills. The extract is chapter 3 of The Coral Island. This is a challenging paper and ideal for students performing at above expected standard.

A collection of taster activities in a carousel lesson, looking at theme, staging, music, use of props and context. You will need to assemble a selection of props for one of the stations and add your own review access page- I used Padlet.
