Used within a Year 4 writing unit, where children were retelling the story of Beowulf.
This is an example story opening for the children’s Beowulf recount, used to show children a model and the grammatical features that were expected.

A drama lesson based around Kensuke’s Kingdom by Micheal Morpurgo. My Year 5 class loved this lesson. The children are asked out 2 scenes from the story with the stimulus provided.
I used this as part of a diary writing unit for character development so one of the stimulus is a diary entry and the other a video of sailing across the open ocean.
Includes powerpoint and resources.
Children are to devise/rough plan their scenes first before creating them. One of the planning sheets is more structured to support some children - although I have found using mixed ability groups works well. Children could also use the unstructured support sheet as some groups preferred to mind map, bullet point or write keywords down.
A sheet for children to use when writing their Newspaper Reports. There is space for the headline, photo, caption and main body.
Version with and without lines if children are using a line guide etc.
Editable version (publisher) and pdf files for easy printing to A3.

Used as part of a Year 4 writing unit, where children are writing a Newspaper Report about the fight between Beowulf and Grendel, where Grendel is defeated
The sheet contains the first person accounts written in the point of view from those involved with the fight - as if they had been interviewed by a reported. Children can then lift quotes from this to use during their newspaper report. Editable word document included.

Beowulf - speaking after the fight with Grendel
King Hrothgar - speaking in The Mead Hall the next day
People of Heorot - speaking in The Mead Hall
Leofric - Beowulf’s warrior - speaking at the scene of the fight
Lesson 3 in the writing unit where children are learning to write a setting description.
This lesson focuses on using exciting adjectives and vocabulary to describe the setting.
Children are also challenged to use a simile if they have learned about this previously. Aimed at a Year 4/5 class. Activity is differentiated 4 ways, for LA, MA and HA Y4 children and then Y5 children.
Lesson contains;
Recap features of a good setting description
Using the adjective ‘big’ as a boring example and up-levelling this as class using synoyms and looking these up in a thesaurus

Brainstorm in small groups to create synonyms, using thesaurses to help
Whole class writing using the brainstormed words to create a descriptive and exciting sentence
Peer-assessment of the class written sentence
Independent work, children are using the differentiated worksheets to improve the provided sentences and then write their own.
This activity is aimed at a Year 5 class, who are studying adding and subtracting fractions. It is differentiated for the HA, MA and LA children. All worksheets are aimed at the mastery approach, with fluency, reasoning and worded problems. I have used these with a Year 5 class.
This is worksheet day 2 of 2 as I spread adding and subtracting over a few days. Children are also encouraged to simplify and convert improper fractions to mixed numbers where possible

Differentiated Equivalent Fractions Homework activity - aimed and used with a mixed ability year 5 class.
The sheet covers; writing equivalent fractions using a diagram, identifying the odd one out, filling in the missing numbers,and solving worded problems. It moves through fluency, reasoning and problem solving questions. I designed this for use with one of my Year 5 classes, but could also be used in Year 6.

In this lesson, children explore their different senses and then write sentences inspired by their senses to describe the setting of the Taj Mahal. The activity is differentiated 4 ways.

Aimed at Year 5 - this lesson is to teach children the grammatical features of a diary entry and then includes an activity where children are locating these features within a text.
Included in this pack is;

Differentiated key templates - children to use colours to complete the key and then identify the features on the text via highlighting/underlining etc
Please note I have not provided the example diary entry as this would normally be specific to the current topic or theme of the class/unit.

This could be used as a wagoll or as part of an activity to highlight and find features in a setting description before writing their own.
An example diary entry written from the perspective of Charlie after he has visited Wonka’s factory.
Aimed for use with a Year 4 class but could be edited up/down to Year 3 and 5 - I have included the word document as well as the pdf so this is easy to do.
In this 3-way differentiated worksheet, children are completing fluency and reasoning questions for converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers.
Children will;
Use bar models to convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers (and vice versa)
Convert improper fractions to mixed numbers
Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions
Fill in the missing numbers to complete the conversions
Spot and correct mistakes when converting

A short lesson/activity based around instructions and relative clauses on How to Make Toast. The children are asked to add more information and description to the basic instructions, using fronted adverbials of time, relative clauses and relative pronouns.
Taught in Year 4/5 - the children loved making actual toast (and eating it too!). A silly teacher demonstration of making toast taking their instructions literally goes down a treat

I made this KS2 Spag guide for the children and parents in my Year 4 class. I designed it for home learning but could also be useful back in the classroom.
There are 2 variations:
Homelearning/revision/parent guide based
A useful tool for children to use whilst writing at home, including links to bitesize and songs where appropriate.
Classbased - essentially the same as the home version except I have removed the links to online resources. I used these in learning journals or stuck in the back of literacy books for children to refer to, so I felt it looked neater if the links were removed.
