In this lesson, students review the following word parts in order to increase their vocabulary knowledge: cred, circum, fract, mal, centi, phob, chron, and centi. This packet begins with a general lesson on breaking apart words. Next, students are asked to try to define some words that have the word roots as they are introduced. Then, they are asked to draw pictures of the definitions to help them remember them. After that, they are given a long list of words that use their new vocabulary and challenged to see how many words they can use to write a paragraph. The fifth activity asks learners to make a word search with their new word list for a classmate to solve, followed by a color by code, word art, and a quiz to check retention. This activity will take your students grocery shopping. They are asked to help their friends by using proportions to tell the cost of certain items. In order to not go over budget, students are asked to set up a ratio or proportion, then subtract how much is spent from how much each friend began with. Therefore, in addition to applying proportional/ratio reasoning to solve real-world problems, students will also have to show knowledge of subtracting decimals as well as multiplication and division. This is a great STEM activity, and it is CCSS-Aligned by having students use higher level thinking skills to solve realistic word problems. This card game is played like regular Rummy except instead of using the normal suits (diamond, spade, heart, clubs), the suits are x, x squared, y, y squared, and xy. Matches are only allowed with like terms so that instead of a normal Rummy play of a 2,3,4 of hearts, students must play 2x, 3x, and 4x for example. Cards are color coded to aid students who are struggling. This is a great way to keep the class engaged with a fun activity while still reinforcing an important Algebraic concept.
