This whole class reading session aims to develop children’s fluency and comprehension skills through reading the opening extract of Richard Adams’ ‘Watership Down.’ The reading is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop children’s VIPERS skills: vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval, sequencing and summarising. It also contains a vocabulary check immediately after the extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language. The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities. The extract needed is provided as a PDF and a link to a web-based version is also included on the first slide. The session is best suited for children in years 4-6, although with minor adaptations it could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older age groups.

They are encouraged to think deeply about the meanings that can be taken from the story, and consider the main ‘turning points’ in their own lives and the lives of others. The learning is guided by a clear and colourful PowerPoint presentation, which guides students through the following step-by-step journey: -Knowledge recall - gauging children’s prior knowledge of Judaism - including Jewish persecution in Egypt and Moses’ early life; -Reading the story of Moses and the Burning Bush - pausing for reflective thought by engaging with the embedded questions; -Considering the deeper meanings and morals of the story - including Moses’ killing of the Egyptian and his worries about leading the Israelites; -Considering their own attitudes towards the events and characters in the story; -Comparing Moses’ turning point with turning points from other religions; -Thinking of how turning points in their own lives have affected them; -Completing a plenary to assess their understanding. This resource pack contains a comprehensive 15-slide Powerpoint and the story/ consideration questions (in both Word and PDF). In the past, I have used this lesson with children from across Key Stage 2 - the key learning is aligned with curriculum expectations for RE, and also the content prescribed by most diocese regions. This engaging and informative lesson enables students to understand the key features of effective anti-heroes, as characterised by Lord Asriel in Philip Pullman’s Northern Lights. In particular, students interpret key character traits of Lord Asriel evident in the 7th chapter of the text, before utilising this understanding to make predictions about the later events involving Lord Asriel, and then creating and describing their own anti-heroes. The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through: Comprehending how Lord Asriel is introduced in the novel opening, through a fun, interactive team activity; Collectively defining the features of effective anti-heroes; Reading an extract from Chapter 7 of Northern Lights, identifying and explaining Lord Asriel’s characterisation as a anti-hero; Making predictions about Asriel’s future role in the novel, based on their interpretations of his character, and understanding of the generic conventions of anti-heroes; Creating and describing their own imaginative villains, utilising the features of villains effectively and imaginatively throughout; Peer assessing each other’s learning attempts. Included is: Whole lesson PowerPoint - colourful and comprehensive; Paper extract of Chapter 7 of Northern Lights (freely available online); Lord Asriel Prediction Worksheet; Create Your Own Anti-Hero template; -Comprehensive lesson plan. The lesson also aims to improve students’ analytical skills, so that they can demonstrate sustained and sophisticated interpretations of the character. This pack includes the full lesson presentation, with animations and key information, a double-page worksheet with clear and concise instructions, True and False cards for the starter activity, a writing to analyse help-sheet, and full teacher guidance.
