These comprehension tasks are based on Chapters 1- 7 of The Twits by Roald Dahl and are designed as a morning activity for the children to complete as they settle in for the day. Each day, I read a part of The Twits before the end of the day, and the following morning, the children answer the comprehension questions once the chapter is finished. This activity includes a range of questions, including retrieval, inference, prediction, summarising, and vocabulary, with varying levels of difficulty.
The resource can also be used for guided reading sessions, providing an opportunity to engage students in discussions about the text and support their comprehension development.
Answers have been included so marking is less onerous. This resource is also great for parents to use at home with their children.
A Word document and PDF file of the task has been included so the questions can be edited easily.
This two-week lesson plan is designed for Year 3 students, combining narrative writing skills with cross-curricular links to the Stone Age history topic. Each day focuses on developing different elements of storytelling—setting, characters, problems, and solutions—within a Stone Age context. The lessons are scaffolded to gradually build students’ ability to write their own narratives, from brainstorming ideas and creating story maps to writing, editing, and improving their stories. Differentiated activities cater to various ability levels, ensuring all students can engage with and succeed in the tasks. The lessons encourage creativity, historical understanding, and literacy development, culminating in a complete Stone Age-themed narrative by the end of the two weeks.

This pack of 6 comprehension tasks is tailored to develop key reading skills through a variety of engaging texts. The questions focus on the following essential skills:
Vocabulary Students will explore new words in context, enhancing their understanding of language. They will identify the meaning of unfamiliar words, use context clues, and explore synonyms and antonyms to deepen their word knowledge.
Inference: Carefully designed questions encourage students to read between the lines, making inferences about characters’ feelings, motivations, and events in the story. This helps students engage more critically with the text and think beyond what is directly stated.
Prediction: Students are prompted to make predictions based on information provided in the text. These questions challenge them to think about what might happen next and explain their reasoning using clues from the text.
Explanation: Explanation questions require students to clarify their understanding of particular parts of the text, such as why characters behave in certain ways or why events unfold as they do. This fosters a deeper understanding of the narrative and its underlying themes.
Retrieval: These questions focus on recalling and retrieving specific details from the text, helping students develop the ability to locate and recall important facts or descriptions.
Summarising: Students practice condensing key ideas into concise summaries, focusing on the main points of a passage while discarding unnecessary details. This skill helps them develop clarity and precision in their reading.
