Get your class talking about science! I made BIG books and put my class into science 'cells' (labels for big books included e.g. Brilliant Bulbs, Terrific Test Tubes) and at the start of each lesson I give the class a science-themed question to discuss. The children each use a different coloured felt-tip pen to record their ideas on a page in their Bright Ideas BIG Books. Included in the pack are BIG questions such as What are our bodies made of? What If's e.g. What if there were no plants in the world, PMI's (i.e. give me a positive, a minus and tell me something interesting!) such as what if your bones were made of jelly? Odd One Outs and Chain Reaction. This is a great pack (that will last you all year!) to get children thinking, talking, predicting, justifying and debating science in a fun way! A couple of bonus extension ideas and some review cards are included too. For more practical resources visit: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/Whitley01

Apostrophes for singular possession - Alien Apostrophes

A PowerPoint introduction - It's the last day at alien school and the teacher needs help to sort out the lost property! Children can practise using apostrophes by using individual whiteboards to write sentences to match the images on the PowerPoint then make up their own sentences using the activity sheet that is included or inventing their own aliens and objects. A useful lesson also for reinforcing phonic skills (alien names) and writing expanded noun phrases. Two fun and interactive get up and go 'Scoot' games ideal for Year 2 linked to coordination and subordination. Print out the A4 cards (laminate) and place them around your classroom or outdoor area. The children then visit each station, read the sentence, identify the coordinating or subordinating conjunction and record on their individual record sheets to build up their own word bank. Both resources are editable and the subordination version is linked to the stories of Roald Dahl. Phonics Check & Phase 3-5 Revision - Roll a word game and table of all words in screener 2011/16

A very handy and flexible game (played in pairs/groups) which can be played a few different ways: Option 1: Read it! Roll the dice, choose a word in the corresponding column & read it. If the child is correct they win the word & cover it or colour it. Option 2: Spell it! Roll the dice, choose a word in the corresponding column, read it, your partner covers it & then the child has a go at spelling it. If the child is correct they win the word & cover it or colour it. Option 3: Read it, Spell it! I used this for a mixed Y1 and Y2 pairing where Y1's had to read the words and Y2's had to spell the words. Also included is a table showing all words in the phonics screener since 2011 and a blank game board so you can chop and change words to suit your needs! Orienteering/Trail KS1

Are you looking for a fun outdoor activity? This is a very popular activity at my school - all you need to do is print out the 12 stations and laminate (optional!) then position them around your outdoor area. You can provide the children with a map so it is more of an orienteering task or just set it up as a trail. The children then work in groups/pairs to visit each station, read and answer the questions (which are a mix of English, maths, science and geography) recording their answers on the sheet provided along with the blue symbol. At the end of the course the children will have collected 11 letters and station 12 gives them a final hint to work out the secret message. This resource is easily edited to suit your needs and there are certificates included for all children who complete the course!
