First World War - Extended Reading - Blood and Iron

An extract from Katja Hoyer’s excellent ‘Blood and Iron’. It is the chapter which provides a ‘summary of the First World War’ and takes the conflict up until the battles of Verdun and the Somme. There are 8 comprehension questions and has been used successfully with Year 9 students to get them to engage with extended reading and history scholarship. I used it as an introduction to the topic but it could equally fit as a homework or a recap task at the end of the unit. Hope it helps. Lesson activity templates (200+ slides) History, Geography, Computer Science, Business Studies

Lesson activity templates (200+ slides) History, Geography, Computer Science, Business Studies, English. I started teaching 12 years ago and in my PGCE year I made a ppt file (modestly) called ‘Master Plan’. In there I collected every lesson activity that I could so I could save time by recycling slide templates but also it proved to be a great reservoir of ideas if I was ever stuck for a lesson. And so here it is, hopefully others can benefit too. They’re divided up into Starters, Development, Plenary and Resources – but they can all be mixed, matched and edited to your needs! I’ve taught History, Geography, Computer Science, Business Studies and English during the last 12 years (Jack of all trades, master of none…) so the templates come filled in with a wide range of existing information/activities but the idea is not to use these slides in your lessons directly – but just like I’ve done, use them for inspiration and quick editing. If you’re on the hunt for high quality lessons in the subjects mentioned above please visit Wolsey Academy for more! Hope it helps.

Made this lesson before the referendum - have used it a number of times since, it works incredibly well - including once as an observation lesson which received great feedback. Differentiated tasks throughout with there being three options for the main activity for three different grouped levels. Ends with a class vote. Actual 2016 Vote Leave and Stronger In literature used for higher levels as a comparison between the two events (Reformation v Referendum). 1. Leave/Remain card sort starter. 2. Differentiated group & solo tasks leading to an essay Lower: Structured development of card sort arguments. Middle: Structured use of card sort arguments to make a facto file (with templates and examples) Higher: Leave & Remain 2016 literature to use to compare to a new set of higher level card sort arguments - leading to written essay tasks with stretch vocabulary sheets. 3. Class referendum and debate. 4. Video plenary - spot the arguments you’ve made. However, if you check out the video in comibination with the blog post at Wolsey Academy - it should give you a better idea of the content of the book.
