Profile of Workshops Using Delta Maria Books
This is a description of interesting activities, that can be made available to pupils during Black History Month. The workshop is a combination of storytelling activities for pupils at Key Stage 2, 3 and 4. There is also a step-by-step pictorial description of how to cook a popular West African rice dish called Jollof Rice.
Jollof rice is the progenitor of the popular African-American dish "Jambalaya". It was taken by West African women into the diaspora of North and South America. Varieties of this rice dish exist or occur in other culinary cultures. The Asians call their version of Jollof Rice "Pilau Rice". The Italians call theirs "Risotto" and the Russians have a similar "Plov"

It is a resource that is colourful and ideal for use during Black History Month. It is possible to use it as follow on work for the book "Seluwa of the Fulani People"

This story was written around a BBC short story competition, titled "Dressed to Kill". It is appropriate material for PHSE, Key Stage 3&4 It is a cautionary tale, that is very appropriate for young people on the threshold of adulthood.
Storytelling
To introduce the children to the Tortoise; a mythical character in West African fables. It was explained liked Ananse the Spider. The Tortoise was also cunning.
The two stories had a moral to them.
The Cunning Tortoise fable ,was to demonstrate that greed robbed people of their dignity, coupled with the loss of the love and respect of other people.
The other fable: The fable of the Tortoise and the Sardines, was a cautionary tale which warned children never to take people at face value and to be careful with strangers.

In the course of delivering the Home Office funded project-'Connecting Communities' for the black community in Manchester, I brought to the attention of the Learning Trust, the fact that the number of black students of African origin was steadily outstripping that of black students of Caribbean origin within the Secondary School system. The choice of literature or reading material within the secondary school environment is yet to reflect this.
