In the course of delivering the Home Office funded project-'Connecting Communities' for the black community in Manchester, I brought to the attention of the Learning Trust, the fact that the number of black students of African origin was steadily outstripping that of black students of Caribbean origin within the Secondary School system. The choice of literature or reading material within the secondary school environment is yet to reflect this.

To introduce the children to the Tortoise; a mythical character in West African fables. It was explained liked Ananse the Spider. The Tortoise was also cunning. The two stories had a moral to them. The Cunning Tortoise fable ,was to demonstrate that greed robbed people of their dignity, coupled with the loss of the love and respect of other people. The other fable: The fable of the Tortoise and the Sardines, was a cautionary tale which warned children never to take people at face value and to be careful with strangers.

A poster that huntingly portrays Elmina Castle and the sad history of this Ancient Portuguese castle, that is still in modern day Ghana. The prose, superimposed on the poster talks about the love that parents bore in their hearts for every loved one that were taken away from the shores of Ghana into an unknown world is deeply moving. Suitable as a teaching resource for Black History Month, the Transatlantic Slave Trade, and understanding communities.

Orisun of the Savannah Grassland is a contemporary tale, which gives an insight into how Africans perceive animals of the wild and their perception of the psyche of these animals. Contrary to popular opinion, Africans value the wildlife, which cohabit their plains and grasslands. The culling programme put in place by countries, such as Kenya and Zimbabwe, is enabling Africans to evolve a happy equilibrium between themselves and the wild life around them. Three endangered species are featured in this fable; i.e the Leopard, the Chimpanzee and the African Elephant.
