Reading is a ‘silent’ process for many children. When first learning they do not possess the ability to imagine what the written word is telling us. They have many, many other skills they have to master before they can get there. This powerpoint is aimed at beginner readers and to try and put some fun into reading. They read it and then they have to match it to the correct picture. With a picture to help young children visualise what they are reading, they have a purpose to reading it too and not just going through the motions. This powerpoint is designed to be used independently, but can obviously be used as a teaching aid too. The idea behind this resource is that children have a word they should read. It has sound buttons underneath to help them and they are mostly CVC words. When they have read the word, they should click on the picture that matches the word. The powerpoint will tell them if they get it right or wrong so they can do this independently or with yourself as guided reading. I made a lot of resources for traditional tales that can be printed off and laminated. Then the idea was for the children in my class to access these independently, either by using pegs to match the answers or other ways to work out the answer like using bottle tops with letters wrote on them. These resources are available in my shop. This resource is exactly the same as the one you can print off with pegs to use showing which picture matches the word, but it is for use on the interactive whiteboard. Again, children can access this independently as it does say when you have the wrong answer or it can be used to model the printed version. All they need to do is click on the correct bottle top to indicate which letter comes next in the CVC word. I did make this for my daughter so this resource has a Frozen theme to indicate which answers are right. This of course can be edited to suit your classes own interests, but I did like the GIFs of them cheering and laughing.

Numicon is such a great resource. It helps young children to visualise numbers in an efficient way. This can easily be linked to Ten Frame learning too. The resources included in this bundle are: Matching Numicon to number wheels for numbers 1-5 (I use pegs for this resource that I have drawn on the numbers. The children then place the peg on the correct Numicon.) Good for fine motor and number recognition. There are two copies of this, one with a Numicon representation and the other with a Ten Frame. I laminated them back to back. Same as above but with numbers 1-10. Matching Numicon to number boards. They have pictures of the Numicon with three different numbers next to it. The children should place a peg on the correct number. Again, good for fine motor and number recognition. This resource goes upto 20. A visual display of Numicon with the number next to them. They are for numbers 1-10 to display in the classroom. They are on a yellow background so they stand out very well.

When young children learn new concepts, it is vital that they use real objects in order to ‘play with the maths’ and this will be able them to visualise it once they are familiar with the new concepts. These resources created will compliment this work using pictorial resources in a combination of ways. Half of these contain a peg board format, which means the child has to place a peg on the right answer. This helps with fine motor skills, which in turn will aid mark making skills. The bonus here is an A3 version of the addition stories, where children can use objects of their own to create a story like shown in the examples.

This is designed on a simple problem solving. Children have to work out if the number sentences are right or wrong. They click on the tick or cross to indicate if ‘Mr Jones’ is right what he says about the addition shown using the part, part, whole mats. The powerpoint shows the cubes being placed together. The powerpoint game indicates if the children choose the correct answer and will not let them pass onto the next until they do. There is a set of 10 questions for the children to have a go at and then it cycles back to the first question. Children can access this game independently or it could be used as a teaching aid.

Phonics should be active and fun. Short activities daily are far better than an extended written activity or a lot of teacher talk. Activities should be designed to allow the children to investigate new sounds. This is a bundle of phase 5 resources including the majority of sounds from ay to split diagraph u-e. The only one I struggled to find imagines to match was the ‘wh’ sound so this is the only one missing. They are £1 each on the shop so having 18 sets of boards at this price is a good bargain. This resource is designed to be a short activity where each child has a different word but the same pictures. They have to read the word and then can place a peg on the correct picture (out of eight) that matches what they have read. If working in a group they can then move onto the next peg board until they complete each one. Or they can be used as an intervention and one child or group could complete them. Initially these were made for a child whose poor fine motor made it hard for him to write but his reading was ok. The pegs were used to aid his fine motor development. But of course, any SEND resources or strategies can benefit many more children within the class. Any child who is beginning to read needs pictures to help form the imagination needed when reading. Young children don’t have that so reading is very much a ‘silent activity’ but with pictures their imaginations will develop until they can picture what they are reading like ‘free readers’ do.

Make shape pictures using 5 shapes. One shape is revealed at a time, so over five slides the picture takes shape. When teaching this I get the children to tell you about the shapes they see - “I think its a square because I see four sides that are all the same length.” This way they are talking about the name of the shape and matching it to its properties. I usually show the first slide on Monday, then the first and second on Tuesday, then the first, second and third on Wednesday etc. It builds up the anticipation of what it will reveal by the end of the week but also revisits the shapes of the previous days so you can ask someone who maybe wasn’t so sure the first time! They enjoy guessing what the picture will make in the end. There are 32 powerpoints in total, each with a unique picture.

However, this pace is unrelenting and some children really struggle, even if they are involved with interventions every single day, they still need extra support. I produced sheets that I place on my writing table that allow children to practice sentence writing and add a picture to match them. Then I thought that some children need a little more scaffolding so I produced these sheets to help those children practice a certain sound. I also added letter formation practice, knowing full well that four year olds do find this hard. So these sheets include the picture and sounds matching Little Wandle, a picture box for children to draw something (I normally ask them to make this match what they write), a line to practice letter formation and a few lines to write an independent sentence. They have worked really well in encourage children to write independently and of course revise the sounds they are not sure of. These worksheets are for Reception Autumn 2 phonemes.

Children love Alphablocks and they are brilliant at helping young kids learn to read. I have found using these instantly recognisable characters in class help children on their initial journey of learning to read. In this game, that children can access independently on the board, children have the word family ‘un’ or ‘ug’ endings already shown on screen. This is surrounded by five pictures, so when an Alphablock friend joins the ‘un’ or ‘ug’ to make a word, the child needs to read this and click on the correct picture that matches the word. The game indicates if they make the right choice but also if they have done it wrong. They cannot move to the next picture until they click on the correct initial sound. At the end of the game it then cycles back to the beginning so you do not have to keep getting up to restart it too. Its a lovely addition to your enhanced learning environment during literacy lessons or phonics activities.

I created all these resources to be used in my class when they start in reception. Children love Alphablocks and they are brilliant at helping young kids learn to read. I created all these resources to be used in my class when they start in reception.
