I am a former Head teacher , teacher of Geography and PSHE in French, teacher of Geography in English and other subjects . I used CLIL to improve standards at 3 schools when in a leadership position. I also delivered assemblies and INSET hence the resources included . June 16th 2023 I uploaded the results of 18 years of CLIL and how it has improved progress and attainment across all subjects in schools not just languages. A wonderful way to improve schools. This series of lessons was used by Year 8 students who had completed a few lessons about drugs and peer pressure in year 7 . In year 8 they built on this by carrying out their own research about drugs in french and designed a board game based on it . They used the theory of multiple intelligences which they acessed through an interactive quiz and then applied the learning to a board game . There is also the opportunity to discuss employment opportunities linked to multiple intelligences .There are key words links to playing the board game and self and peer assessment in French .

This lesson involves setting up the classroom with products which involve purchasing choices . For example washing up liquid which is environmentally friendly and that which is not. Different types of Tuna , line caught and others, fair trade chocolate , organic chocolate , supermarket basic brand . There is a form in the student handbook which can be used . Students go around the product and note the price (see page 84 of the student handbook) Students add up the prices of a fair trade , environmentally friendly products and those that are neither.They are given a budget and decide which products to buy There are powerpoints about fair trade to explain how it works. Students then justify the choices of product that they have decided to buy. There is an example of student writing

This is a series of lessons which take Year 7 students through protective behaviours which will help them to identify signs when they need help and who to seek help from. The year 7 course was run for a one hour lesson each week in French. SEAL themes were also used in German tutorial time each day in year 7 and a description is given here of what happened. This website contains FREE CLIL resources for teachers . Judith Woodfield has copies of an entire Year 7 course for Geography in French with some units in German and an entire Year 8 course for Geography in French . Year 7 Mapwork Year 7 Tropical Rainforests Year 8 Deserts Year 8 European Union There is also a Year 6 day module on the hydrologcal cycle. Just google Learning Through Languages UK to find the website. There is also free CPD on CLIL throughout the year. Previous talks given by Judith Woodfield are also available as well as CLIL experts from around the world.

These powerpoints contain links to video clips which provide student views about CLIL. They were filmed in two different schools in the UK as part of CLIL programmes . One programme lasted 10 years and the other 6 years. Both programmes contributed to improved progress and attainment by the students involved and shows in whole school improvement figures… Each programme was followed by all students in Year groups 7 and 8 as an entitlement. The clips show Geography, ICT and PHSE in FRench and German. Please read the copyright article which has been produced to accompany all of the CLIL materials produced by Judith Woodfield. OFSTED produced a good practice guide about one of these schools and this is also included . Judith Woodfield is on the advisory panel of Learning Through Languages UK. Her FREE resources are available in the resources section of the website. Copies of talks given on April 20th 2020 and October 11th 2021 are also available on the site in the “CLIL Mondays” section. CLIL mondays is a series of free talks by CLIL professionals and provides an opportunity for teachers involved in CLIL to share their good practice.

Lesson plan in methodology booklet page 22 onwards unit resource The next few lessons concentrate on problems in Amazonia and the students aim to solve the mystery of who killed the rubber tapper Chico Mendez. This is a true event but the trial is fictitious. The lessons take you through understanding the problems, looking at the evidence and students preparing their speeches in role. Then a trial take place . This is challenging but the students enjoy using their French to good effect .
