A complete lesson based on the topic of loudness and pitch. The lesson is based on the Activate 1 (2.3) SOW but can be used for others. All resources/activities are incorporated into the slides, no additional worksheets required. Planner cards (red, green and yellow) are needed for AFL at one of the learning checkpoints, and an oscilloscope would be good for the demonstration - a video is included if this is not possible. The lesson teaches the relationship between loudness and amplitude, and frequency and pitch prior to class wide AFL. The audible range is discussed and students are then redirected to the question posed within the starter. Students must then design an audible deterrent systems to protect certain animals (such as a goldfish) from predators making use of a table which gives the audible range of different species. The plenary is based on student reflection on their progress against the learning objectives, a soft toy can be thrown between students to elect who reads out their answer.
A complete lesson on the topic of sound and energy transfer. The lesson is based on the Activate 1 (P2.2) SOW but can be used for others. All content is incorporated into the slides, no additional worksheets needed. The lesson is based on students drawing their own conclusions from given information or data. An activity is included where students determine where in the classroom sound would travel fastest, based on the speed of sound through different materials. A think pair and share session around thunder and lightening is used to compare the speed of light and sound. The main written exercise is a differentiated 'beat the grid challenge' where students answer as many questions as they can in 10 minutes. The plenary is based upon reflection against the learning objectives, students can be instructed to read out tier answers and popcorn this on to a peer.
A full 1h lesson covering the topic of waves. The lesson is based on the Activate 1 (P2.1) SOW but can be used for others. All activities are incorporated into the slides with no additional worksheets required. A slinky is required for a brief demonstration alongside white boards for AFL. Students are asked to perform a Mexican wave during the early stages of the lesson to visualise how energy (but not matter) is transferred within a wave. The plenary is based in students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives, this can be made fun by throwing a soft toy between students and asking them to read out their answers.
A full lesson on the topic of muscles. The lesson is based on the Activate 1 SOW (B2.6) but can be used for others. The lesson includes a competitive game based on the recall of information and a whiteboard quiz. The plenary is based on student reflection on their progress against the learning objectives. PowerPoint animations and timers are included to facilitate self/peer mediated correction and to promote pace respectively.
A full differentiated lesson based on the topic of Boiling. The lesson is based upon the Activate 1 (C1.4) SOW but can be used for others. The lesson includes a differentiated worksheet and activity and a practical exercise involving the growing of copper sulfate crystals. The plenary is based on student reflection on their progress against the learning objectives.
A full differentiated lesson on the topic of states of matter. The lesson is based on the Activate 1 (C1.2) SOW but can be used for others. The lesson includes a card sort, written activities and a practical exercise where students study the change of state in stearic acid. Animations and timers are included to promote peer/self correction of answers and to promote pace respectively.
A full differentiated lesson on the topic of seed dispersal. This lesson is based on the Activate 1 SOW (B3.7) but can be used for others. The lesson includes video and a simple practical where students cut out seeds of varying wingspan and monitor their flight time. PowerPoint animations and timers are included to allow peer correction of answers and to promote pace respectively. A plenary quiz is included where students can throw a sot toy to one another to determine who answers next.
A full differentiated lesson on the topic of the skeleton. The lesson is based on the Activate 1 (B2.4) book but can be used for other SOW. The lesson includes an activity where students cut out bones and assemble skeletons in a pose of their choosing, peer assessment is based on the correct labelling of the bones and creativity of the pose. PowerPoint animations and timers are included to promote peer correction of written tasks and to promote pace respectively. An X-ray based whiteboard quiz is included as a plenary.
A full differentiated lesson on the topic of breathing. The lesson is based on the Activate 1 book (B2.3) but can be used for others. The lesson includes video, a demonstration using a bell jar and a simple practical exercise where students observe an increase in CO2 in expired breath using lime water (can be done as a demo). Homework is also included or can be deployed as a stretch activity. PowerPoint animation and timers are included to promote pace and self/peer mediated correction of answers.
A full differentiated lesson on the gas exchange system. The lesson is tailored to the Activate 1 textbook topic B2.2 but can be used for others. Includes an activity where students make use of straws, raisins and cocktail sticks to model the respiratory system. PowerPoint timers and animations are included to promote pace and self/peer mediated correction of answers.
This lesson is based on the activate 1 SOW and so is pitched to a year 7 class. The lesson includes an introduction to the solar system through video, think pair and share and a simple DART activity. Students then complete an exercise where the distance between planets and the sun is modelled through folding and annotating paper. A graph drawing exercise is included as an extension, where students link the distance from the sun to temperature.
A full lesson covering specific heat capacity based on the AQA SOW. Students are scaffolded up to using the equation within calculations prior to a practical. The (required) practical follows the AQA SOW but employs voltmeters and ammeters instead of Joulmeters. Awards can be given to students who calculate the closest SHC for aluminium.
A full, differentiated lesson on the topic of drag forces and friction. The lesson is based on the activate 1 SOW and so is pitched to a year 7 group. The lesson includes a think pair and share, DART activity, simple practical activity (requiring different surfaces and a newtonmeters), differentiated question grid challenge and a reflective plenary. All answers are incorporated into the slides via animation and timers are included to promote pace.
A full differentiated lesson on the topic of metal displacement reactions. The content is based on the activate 2 SOW and is therefore tailored to a year 8 group. The lesson includes the practical, support sheets and stretch activities for high ability students. The plenary is conducted using whiteboards; students write out the equations they have studied during the practical - they are scaffolded up to this. All answers are included into the slides through animation, timers are included to promote pace.
A full 1h lesson based on the activate 2 'metals and water' topic. The lesson incorporates a demonstration of group 1 metals reacting with water, alongside a reaction of magnesium and steam. If you are uncomfortable doing this videos can be used as an alternative. Prediction and equation writing is planned ahead of these demonstrations - students are scaffolded up to this. Students produce a mnemonic to remember the reactivity series and test their learning through a simple ( but fun) planner card activity. A great lesson to 'promote a love of learning' .
A revision broadsheet tailored to the new AQA B2 topic of work. Covers cell division, stem cells, stem cell dilemmas etc. Students can complete the sheet using pages 26-33 of the AQA textbook for support. Slides included to direct pupils during the lesson.
A complete lesson on metals and oxygen based on the activate 2 SOW. The lesson includes a practical demonstration where students fill in a observation sheet and produce (simple) balanced equations. If you can get pure oxygen from the techies you can really promote a love of learning with this. A choice of 2 plenaries are included, reflective writing or whiteboard based. Answers to each learning checkpoint are incorporated into the slides via animation. Timers are included to promote pace.
A complete differentiated lesson (including practical) based on the activate 2 'acid and metals' content. The lesson includes and introduction to the topic, outline of practical, prediction/conclusion writing and a differentiated question grid 'challenge' to act as a plenary. Timers are included to promote pace and all answers are incorporated into the slides via animation. This lesson was delivered to a year 8 group, all abilities supported.
