S1 Revision Quizzes

S1 Revision Quizzes

(6)
Two quizzes for Edexcel Statistics 1 revision. One is very long - it covers everything! The other is just 10 questions so would work well as a warm-up in a revision lesson.
Standard Deviation Homework

Standard Deviation Homework

(3)
This is a Pret homework for standard deviation. In Pret homeworks, pupils practise, recall, extend and think. These homeworks are typically followed in class with spelling or memory tests and discussions about research findings. For an editable version of this homework and Pret homeworks for many more topics, see http://prethomework.weebly.com/
Factorising Non-Monic Quadratics by Inspection

Factorising Non-Monic Quadratics by Inspection

(3)
This resource provides a structured approach for pupils to develop fluency in factorising harder quadratics by inspection. Initially some values are given - the difficulty level increases as the scaffolding is removed.
Maths in the Simpsons - Enrichment Lecture

Maths in the Simpsons - Enrichment Lecture

(4)
This enrichment lecture is based on ideas from Simon Singh’s book ‘The Simpsons and their Mathematical Secrets’. It covers Fermat’s Last Theorem, Mersenne primes, perfect numbers, narcissistic numbers, binary numbers and rock-paper-scissors. The slides include footage from The Simpsons, Futurama and The Big Bang Theory. There are 6 videos embedded in the slides which I believe you will have to save alongside the presentation to make sure they run when clicked. If you’d like some help preparing speaking notes for these slides please tweet me (@mathsjem).
Investigating Recurring and Terminating Decimals

Investigating Recurring and Terminating Decimals

(2)
Students simplify the fractions using prime factors and then they use a calculator to convert the fraction to a decimal. They then look for patterns in order to work out what the rule is for whether a fraction terminates or recurs. The aim is to spot that once in simplified form, a fraction will recur if the denominator has any factor other than 2s or 5s. This activity is based on one from a 1967 calculator handbook. It interleaves prime factorisation, simplifying fractions and using a calculator. It deepens students’ understanding of how fractions are simplified and leads to new knowledge about recurring decimals.
Changing the Subject of Science Formulae

Changing the Subject of Science Formulae

(2)
I made this resource for a borderline set of Year 9 students to help them practise the basics of changing the subject. I wanted to give them some physics formulae but didn’t want anything too complex, so made this little worksheet.
Trigonometry Homework

Poisson or Binomial

(8)
11 questions in which students have to decide whether the distribution is Poisson or Binomial. Could be used with mini-whiteboards. The animation reveals the correct answer on each slide.
Thinking about Gradient

Thinking about Gradient

(2)
This worksheet is designed to be used in (or in advance of) a first lesson on calculus, before introducing differentiation from first principles. The aim of this worksheet is to explore what students already know about gradient and open their minds to the idea of finding the gradient of a curve.

(4)
A quick quiz of key C2 facts, useful for a warm-up in a revision lesson. Aligned to the Edexcel specification. If you want an editable version, please see the Core AS library on my blog.

Compound Interest Introduction with Scaffolding

Compound Interest Introduction with Scaffolding

(0)
I found lots of resources with wordy exam-style compound interest questions, but not much for students who need more support. This was made for a borderline H/F Year 9 class. It was used during lockdown, hence the instruction at the end to input answers to a Microsoft Forms quiz in order to check them. The link is provided in case you want to duplicate the quiz. An editable version of the resource is provided in case you want to remove reference to the quiz. This practice resource followed on from a basic introduction to compound interest - the following lesson looked at wordy questions.
