This resource contains three employability sessions aimed at Year 10 students in secondary school through to Year 12 students embarking on Further Education. With the introduction of the up and coming T-Levels in 2020, schools and colleges now need to prepare our young people for the world and work more than ever before and so these sessions aim to best prepare students. Session one “Getting work ready" is to highlight a students skill set, strengths and weaknesses and what a placement will consist of to develop weaker skill sets. Session two “Finding a placement” is designed to help students approach employers and how to search for placements. Session three “Placement expectations” shows students typical attitudes and behaviours employers like to see displayed, how to dress appropriately and what to do if things go wrong.

It is a brilliant stimulus for creative writing and engaging, particularly for the lower band students who struggle to write down their ideas. There is a small film attached to the resource, courtesy of The Literacy Shed which has some fabulous resources and each lesson has differentiated and challenging activities attached. The first lesson “Why is work experience so important?” allows students to understand the need for work experience and the benefits it will create. Lesson 2 “Finding out what I want to do” allows students to explore their interests (and even find out what they are!), alongside a range of different career options. Lesson 3 “How to approach businesses and employers” shows students the best way to contact businesses to arrange their own work experience placement. This includes template emails and how to make their emails appealing. Lesson 4 “First day jitters” prepares students for their placements with what to wear, what to take with them, how to prepare the night before, and finally Lesson 5 “Using your experience for the future” allows students to reflect on their work placement and add their newly acquired skills to their CV.
