This lesson focuses primarily on the Circle of Fifths, and this includes both the major and minor keys up to and including 4 sharps and flats. Students are taken through the information with both an information sheet, and a step-by-step PowerPoint. 14 x written/ notation tasks develop students’ knowledge of how keys are organised. This is not just a lesson in ‘what’ the Circle of 5ths is, students are taught how to create the circle from scratch. This reinforces understanding, and it also incorporates revision of major and minor scales, with a focus on how major scales create accidentals which become key signatures for major and relative minor keys.
Students also discover relationships between keys on the Circle of 5ths as a foundation to appropriate/ most common modulations: Dominant keys to the right/ Subdominant to the left/ Relative Major or Minor inwards or outwards on the rings. There are 10 x listening questions to conclude the lesson, in which students’ ability to distinguish between major and minor tonalities is tested. By the end of the lesson students will have a secure knowledge of the topic, and you – the teacher – will have more than enough scope to set additional activities as homework should you wish to, and suggestions are included in the teacher notes on the PowerPoint.
All of this comes with a 28-slide animated and beautifully-presented PowerPoint, annotated with detailed teaching guidance notes, to make delivery of the lesson smooth and efficient – plus a 4-page student information sheet, 4-page activity sheet and 4-page detailed answers sheet. With regards to the listening questions, MP3s are provided (and they are always my own compositions), and you may well want to insert the audios into the slide rather than use media player.

This lesson focuses on Major and Minor Scales, and that includes both the Harmonic and Melodic Minor scales. Students are taken through the information with both an information sheet, and a step-by-step PowerPoint. 11 x written/ notation tasks develop students’ ability to create major and minor scales using fixed-interval patterns, use these scales to create basic triads, and observe the differences between the harmony in melodic minor scales and harmonic minor scales. There are 10 x listening questions to conclude the lesson, in which students’ ability to distinguish between major and minor scales is tested, and those of higher abilities may distinguish between the harmonic and melodic minor scales. By the end of the lesson students will have a secure knowledge of the topic, and you – the teacher – will have more than enough scope to set additional activities as homework should you wish to.
All of this comes with a 33-slide animated and beautifully-presented PowerPoint, annotated with detailed teaching guidance notes, to make delivery of the lesson smooth and efficient – plus a 4-page student information sheet, 4-page activity sheet and 4-page detailed answers sheet. This structured resource pack is an excellent introduction to analysing music and is perfect for youngsters aged approximately between 5 and 8 years. Students use their knowledge of colours to help them understand musical features relating to the musical elements. Five whole 1-hour lessons are included in the pack with fun, themed colouring worksheets for the students, Detailed PowerPoint with audio links (tested and working as of April 2020) and full teaching guidance so that you feel completely supported whether you are a music specialist, or not. It is easy to deliver.
Full Details:
How this works is as beautiful as it is simple. There are 5 themed lessons, each with its own colouring-in worksheet: In the Woods; Beneath the Sea; Out on Safari; On the Farm; Up In Space. A specific piece of famous classical music is the focus of each lesson, and the music has some kind of link to the theme. For instance: In the Woods is Vivaldi’s Autumn from the Four Seasons; Copland’s Hoe-down is the one for On the Farm.
Each student worksheet has 8 pairs of statements. Two of the eight are opinion-based (such as ‘I like/ do not like this music’). The other 6 are related to musical elements and specific features of the piece of music used for the lesson. For example: The music is fast/ slow. Each statement has a colour pattern to use, and where statements are a little more complex (such as ‘I can hear only stringed instruments’ or ‘I can hear wind and stringed instruments’) they can link their knowledge of colour to reach the right answer. For instance: a child of 5 or 6 years old probably doesn’t know what a string orchestra sounds like, but they know that a bee should be black and yellow, not blue and pink. So, to colour a bee, they know the statement for the black and yellow colour pattern is correct. Accordingly, they know they can only hear stringed instruments. As they colour, and listen to the music (which they must be encouraged to do) they begin to subconsciously learn ‘what a string orchestra sounds like’.
This system allows young students to develop musical analysis skills by building on prior knowledge of colour - not to mention becoming acquainted with composers and music from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern eras. Furthermore, the opinion-based questions (like/ dislike; mood changes; interpretation, etc) offer excellent opportunities for the teacher to lead group discussions. All of this comes with full resource support for teaching and learning. I thoroughly recommend it.

In this download pack you get 14 x 30-Question interactive Quizzes: 7 x Gold Run quizzes (ideal for learning and consolidating) and 7 x Stirke Out! quizzes (ideal for revision and testing) - both of which work extremely well on an individual basis and whole-class basis.
There are 7 topic areas covered:
GCSE Music Terminology for Rhythm, Metre and Tempo
GCSE Music Terminology for Harmony and Tonality
GCSE Music Terminology for Melody and Texture
GCSE Music Terminology for Timbre and Dynamics
GCSE Music Terminology for Structure and Genre
General Musical Knowledge
A Level Music Foreign Terminology/ ABRSM Grade 5
PLUS you also get a Christmas version to do with your Tutor Group absolutely free until the end of term. So that’s 16 quizzes in total (8 Strike Out! and 8 Gold Run).
For each question, there are 4 possible answers. In the Gold Run! each of the 30 questions are asked in turn and whilst any number of incorrect answers will sound a ‘buzzer’, the same question will stay on the screen until the correct answer is reached. Students need to answer all 30 questions to win. This is ideal as a whole class activity, that will last about 20 or 30 minutes. In the Strike Out! version of the quiz, the same 30 questions are grouped into 10 sets of 3, and an incorrect answer will trigger the 2nd question in the set, another incorrect answer will trigger the final question in the set, and if that question is answered incorrectly, that’s a Strike Out! and it’s somebody else’s turn to have a go (or the class starts again). This is a more exciting version (and competitive!). Both versions are great for revision - end of term/ half-term, or just for general revision of terminology/ language for learning.
For your convenience, the download pack has both .pptx and .ppt versions of both quizzes so that you can access them in Open Office as well as ordinary Office applications. I hope that you enjoy these quizzes and that they provide lots of fun revision activities for you and your classes.

This movement is ideal for study as part of the Stage 6 Music 2 HSC Program. As a full first movement from a Barqoue Concerto Grosso, it fits into the mandatory area of study Western Music 1600-1900. A Sibelius score is an exceptionally powerful tool to have for analysing chords, themes, motives, and much more, at the click of a button. There are clear advantages of having a Sibelius score as a study aid. With the later versions of these scores, you can isolate individual parts to show melodic lines and harmonies more clearly, you can use the chord analysis and ‘find motive’ functions making analysis quicker and easier – and there are several other analysis plug-ins that Sibelius offer, making your life much easier. Another clear advantage of having a Sibelius Score in addition to a paper one is that it is an invaluable aid to improve score-reading: the playback line runs along with the music and students can better see what is happening. Certainly, my students all benefited from Sibelius scores for their set works. A complete list of versions included in this download pack is as follows: Sibelius 7.5; Sibelius 7; Sibelius 7 First; Sibelius 6; Sibelius 6 Student; Sibelius 6 First; Sibelius 5; Sibelius 5 Student; Sibelius 5 First; Sibelius 4. If you would like an earlier version, please just email me, and I’ll add it to the resource pack. Also included in the pack is a high-quality soundcard MP3 extraction of the full score for you to use in the classroom.

This topic focuses on Rhythmic Development, specifically: rhythmic augmentation; rhythmic diminution; rhythmic retrograde; combining techniques. Students are taken through the process with both an information sheet, and a step-by-step PowerPoint. This is an Introduction to 4-part harmony. It is a full and comprehensive topic that would fit nicely into 3 x 1-hour lessons, but could be squeezed into 2 x 1-hour lessons with a gifted A-Level Music class if the final task was also set as homework.
The content is based around an introduction to Bach Chorales. There are 4 tasks in total.
Task 1 is: choosing chords to harmonise a melody. This is based on identifying the key , drawing out triads, and matching given melody notes with the triads/ chords, leading to a 4-part arrangement of the chord progression they have chosen, applying the techniques that are introduced throughout.
Task 2 is: Arranging for 4 parts. Students are given a fixed chord progression with which to harmonise the melody from task 1. Meanwhile the PowerPoint will take them through the following: Note Doubling; Consecutive 5ths ; Consecutive 8ves ; Consecutive Unisons ; Chord Spacing ; Six-Way check (SA; ST; SB; AT; AB; TB) to prevent banned consecutives.
Task 3 is: Using passing notes to create momentum. Students will be shown a model answer on the PowerPoint to Task 2, which then becomes the starting point for Task 3. The PowerPoint takes students through passing notes (what they are, what they do, and pitfalls of using too many at once) and then students are to add passing notes to the given arrangement.
Task 4 is: Working in a minor key. Students use the tonic minor to largely transfer their arrangement from the major, but new concepts are introduced for them to think about: melodic augmented 2nds (and using the melodic minor scale to avoid them); Tierce de Picardie cadence (where, how, and why it’s used); the tricky Mediant in minor keys.
From a teaching perspective, you have a full 20-slide Powerpoint making delivery of content easy, MP3 audios of the model answers so students can hear how nice good 4-part writing really sounds, Sibelius 5, 6, 7, and 7.5 templates if you want to use Music ICT to complete the tasks, 4 x PDF worksheets (that you’ll want to hand out one at a time because model answers become the next worksheet!) in case you don’t have/ don’t wish to use Music ICT.
